Re: After living in Detroit for 34 years, Ames would be
I concur with those saying Ames is a perfect-sized town to live in/around. There's usually something going on and the people are not a bunch of cut-throat all about their "image" fakes. After living in Vegas this past year my wife and I are ready to make a return to the Ames area sometime in the next year or so. I would personally rather have it too cool than too hot in my place of residence but I guess from some of the others' responses most people don't go along with that thinking. I think it is because fall is my favorite season and it just doesn't seem right without good ol' Friday night H.S. football followed by college games on Saturday with the leaves changing color...

The leaves changing color I do miss. Down here they tend to change color for about half a day and that's it. Then they just fall slowly all winter long. But after being in Texas for the last 2 winters - I'm not sure I'll ever be able to live up north again. The winter weather down her is great. Sure the summers are hot, but they're warm up in Iowa too.
What we need to do is find a way to move Ames down here for the winter and then move it back up as spring rolls around.

I can understand bashing EIU's academics, sports programs and campus, but why do you have to expand that to the City of Iowa City? I live in IC and over the course of 8.5 years I've grown to love it! It's not without its problems (proliferation of downtown bars and college drinking issues), but overall it's a great place to live and raise children! I would NEVER be critical of Ames as I love the place, and I hope at least one of my children goes there to matriculate, but I don't think I'd willingly leave IC to move there either!
I can't believe I wasted POST #400 to defend my adopted home! Disclaimer: I still hate the hawkeyes! I agree with everything you've said iccyfan. IC isn't my cup o' tea, but that's because I'm into scenery around town and such as well as education and the "normal" stuff. I think IC is kind of an ugly town, but that's only because EIU is so spread out. I absolutely LOVE the open-air theatre for the Shakespeare festival though. Do you know what they're performing this summer at all? I'd love to go again. Fall is only second to Spring. The rebirth of plants and love is just amazing to see blossom every March/April/May. Fall and Spring are my favorite two seasons, that's why I don't think I could ever like living somewhere that doesn't have a true winter.

Good idea, but I'd miss the snowball fights with my roommates. Pelting them with ice-balls is too much fun. Also, taking the shovel and burying their car in the snow so they have to dig it out once they get home is hilarious as well. (This is why I hide my car in the winter)

Thanks, buddy - it's a little over-the-top, but I'll take your advice and pipe down anyway. Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please. - Mark Twain
