wants Kem Nweke, then I want Kem Nweke. If they want Vette, then I want Vette. I trust that the coaching staff will make a decision that is best for the team.

I couldn't agree more. I hate it when people who have never even seen the kid play come on here and say we don't need him, he sucks, etc. The "recruiting services" sometimes miss on kids when they don't see a lot of their games.
Some people wear Superman pajamas. Superman wears Chuck Norris pajamas.

Oh come on. The recruiting services are always right on. In fact, I bet McD never leaves home and just uses his computer for all recruiting. Without it, how would he know who is interested in ISU????
If Iowa State had always gone by the recruiting rankings, we would not have had very good teams in the past.
-Kelvin Cato was originally a South Alabama recruit
-Dedric Willoughby was originally a New Orleans recruit
-Wesley Johnson went basically unrecruited after taking a year off
-Curtis Stinson only had offers from Iowa State and Drexel
-Jamaal Tinsley was a juco transfer
-Martin Rancik was relatively unknown kid playing in Minnesota
-Paul Shirley did not have any scholarship offers
The same could be said about the football team too.
-Tim Dobbins was a 2 star recruit playing for the Chargers
-Jordan Carstens was a walk-on that started for the Panthers
-Ellis Hobbs was recruited as a running back but plays DB for Patriots
-Sage Rosenfels chose Iowa State over Western Illinois and is in the NFL

I agree that these recruiting services that rate players are a joke. However, they tend to be pretty accurate on the very top guys (the guys that make McDonalds AA and Parade AA, etc.). Just look at our history...the cornerstone of arguably the best ISU team in history was Marcus Fizer...a highly rated McDonald's AA.
You also need to remember that a lot of different situations lead to guys being "missed" in the recruiting process...Wesley Johnson is a good example. The kid decides to go to a prep school which folds shortly after he gets there and he falls off the radar. Or look at Tinsley...he never played organized ball in HS...only street ball in NYC. Additionally, you never know what players might develop in college. Scottie Pippen was 6-1, I believe, when he entered college and he grew 6 or 7 inches after enrolling.
I'm not a big fan of the "star rating system" but I also believe the jury is still out on whether or not McDermott can identify and recruit guys who can play in the Big 12 to ISU. I am optimistic that he can but I don't think it has been proven yet since this is really his first class (last year's was just a scramble to fill slots).
I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
This is a tough situation for the coaching staff. They would undoubtely choose whomever they feel will make the best contribution to ISU. HOWEVER, it would really suck to pass on Vette and have him go anywhere else and excel. We want the best that the state of Iowa has to offer to be at ISU.
The local kid would generate press and local enthusiasm. Probaby get a few ISU converts from the Waverly area. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (local newspaper) will devote more space to ISU basketball.
It's something to consider, but really we want the best player on the floor.
