Re: Worst Basketball hire
Steve Alford is a terrible gameday coach, but maybe he can help out New Mexico (a little), bcuz recruiting could make a difference there. and that was about all he was good at, recruiting and then wasting that recruited talent.
Lickliter wasn't a TERRIBLE hire, but wasn't that good for a big 10 team even if it is only iowa. good luck competing with Mich St, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio St, and even soon Michigan in the future (I think Mich. got a GREAT hire)
I think I'd have give another tally to Kansas State. I was actually one of the people who thought it was a huge mistake to get Huggins in the first place. things are now just not lookin good for them.

Re: Worst Basketball hire
I don't understand why what Colorado did was a bad hire. I don't know how you can vote for anyone other than Kansas State.

Re: Worst Basketball hire
Colorado hired Jeff Bzdelik, fromer the coach of the Denver Nuggets. He was a good NBA coach, just didn't get along with GM Kiki Vanderweghe.
CU hired a good coach. Air Force has been to the dance the past two years with Jeff as the coach. I dislike CU, strongly, but KSU's hire is far worse than CU's.

K-State, on the other hand, continues to keep their heads buried in their a$ses and make poor choices. It's only a matter of time before the pres over there fires that AD.

Re: Worst Basketball hire
I thought Iowa, A&M, and Colorado all made good hires personally. Minnesota hit a homerun with Tubby Smith as well. The K-State hire wasn't great, but it was a strange situation atleast. For New Mexico to seek Steve Alford out is by far the worst of the possible choices.

Re: Worst Basketball hire
I liked Colorado's hire a lot. They actually got a coach that had been succesful at one of the best mid-major schools. One would think it would be an upgrade from their previous coach which isn't the case at K-State.
I don't know much about the Hawgs' new coach but they're up there with Iowa for hearing some big names to start and ending up with a much lesser known coach.
I'll go with K-State and their desperation hire.

Re: Worst Basketball hire
CU hired a great coach. If it is possible to win there, he (I can't spell his name) will, at least until he gets a better offer somewhere else.
It has to be K State. They sold their soul to hire Bobby "I never graduated a player" Huggins, because Huggins spent the year he was out of basketball brokering Mayo and Walker to try to get a job. So they got the recruiting class, but Huggins was looking to get out as soon as he got there. It was a knee jerk reaction by a guy (the AD) that was embarrassed, rarely does anything positive happen in that situation.

From most of what I've read about Iowa, they really only contacted Pearl, and maybe Marjerus. Altman was never contacted btw, he would've jumped all over that like a fat kid on cake.

Re: Worst Basketball hire
K-State, without a doubt. They hired a guy who has basically been banned from coaching in Florida because of the biggest ethics violations case in high school history (thought I'm not certain what it entailed). They hired him in a desperate attempt to keep recruits happy. He'll probably be gone faster than Wayne was.

SN: Sooners had worst offseason hire - College Basketball - MSNBC.com
article about the hires LAST year.
some of big 12 interest:
"Biggest gamble: Oklahoma, Jeff Capel
Although Capel did a terrific job for Virginia Commonwealth, at age 31 he is very young to be moving into the Big 12. He is moving into a part of the country where he has few longstanding recruiting connections. He needs players fast because transfers depleted the Sooners' upper classes and three gifted players who had signed with OU in the fall asked to be released. Grade: C "
"Surest bet: Iowa State, Greg McDermott
McDermott has been in Iowa longer than corn. He runs sophisticated offenses and defenses that enabled teams at Northern Iowa to compete with high-major opponents. As long as there are enough solid players in the region, McDermott will succeed. Grade: B+ "
"Boldest move: Kansas State, Bob Huggins
Whereas Missouri retreated from Huggins' radioactive public image, K-State moved forward and grabbed him. And the reaction? Pretty tame. There have been few loud condemnations of the move. Huggins has signed two prime players and added a commitment from a third, which suggests the Wildcats quickly will become a factor in the Big 12. Grade: A- "
hmmmmmmmmmm...

Re: Worst Basketball hire
I would actually go with Texas A&M. I think Turgeon is a pretty good coach, but he hasn't been great by any means and thats in the MVC. I think part of this is because it seems like quite a downgrade from the old coach. The Big 12, and especially the South is a big step from the MVC.
