But...I ventured down to Iowa City to scope out the Hawkeye's Spring Scrimmage in my Bret Meyer jersey and Iowa State cap and the following are idiotic quotes from random Hawkeye fans at the scrimmage.
First thing as I got out of the car: "WHO DO YOU THINK'S GONNA WIN TODAY?" a tailgater asks someone.
"GO HAWKS, KICK THEIR ***!"
(A kicker is wearing #5) "IS THAT DREW TATE? DREW!!!! I LOVE YOU!!"
Q. "WHERE'S CAPTAIN KIRK?" (He's right in front of us.)
A. "SCREW THAT WHERES SPOCK?"
"WHERE'S BOB SANDERS?"
"That #11 looks good." (Walk on quarterback, proceeds to throw 3 interceptions.) | |

If a Hawk fan wore his Hawk garb to the ISU spring game I'd think he was a dick.

Not a good plan! Why did you do that? Obviously you are a young man. I'm 52 and have learned that it's best to just avoid that stuff. In fact, I've had to warn mind my daughter and another ISU fan to avoid that enemy territory during last year's FB game. They both came back with negative nasty stories of how they were treated. Very negative treatment. My solution,, don't go there.

I Make a POINT to wear it when i go. The best was wearing my "State Champs 23-3 ISU Shirt" anytime I went last year. Of course, i've heard nasty stuff before, but I am so used to it being a Cyclone fan in eastern iowa my WHOLE life. But hey - I get a kick outta it, and it helps that I am 6'4" 210 lbs and could kick the crap out of about 95% of the people who say something smartass to me. I like your solution of "don't go there," bcuz I.C. does indeed suck - but some of us basically have to drive into and through there a lot.

I've had both great and horrible experiences in IC. When I go to visit high school buds, it's always a good time. The only time I've ever been verbally attacked in IC was when I was six. Maybe they're afraid of me now? I don't know for sure. I like to think that my superior intellect scares the hell out of everyone I meet.

I like to think that my superior intellect scares the hell out of everyone I meet. I usually have good to great experiences in Iowa City. I stopped by the grocery store on my way out of town later after the Iowa/ ISU basketball game in December. I actually had one of the checkers donned in Iowa apparel wish our team luck for the rest of the season, and complimented the other ISU fans that had come through that evening.
See, it's not the Iowa City folk you need to worry about. It's the bandwagoners surrounding Iowa City that only support Iowa because it's the closest thing they have to a professional sports venue!

My experiences in Iowa City have been pretty similar. When I was 10, I caught all kinds of crap for wearing a UCLA shirt into Kinnick. But I've also been to 2 or 3 ISU/Iowa games at Kinnick wearing my Cyclones gear, and was always treated with a lot of respect. The last time I went, I had several Hawk fans shake my hand, pat me on the back, and offer congratulations after we beat 'em.
From my experience, there are two groups that you would do well to avoid: 1) drunken students, who can be downright dangerous at times, and 2) the "t-shirt alumni" -- unsophisticated, uneducated fans for whom the closest that they've ever come to actually going to college is buying the team t-shirt that they wear to games. If you can avoid those two factions, you can normally have a civil, enjoyable experience wearing your team colors in "enemy territory."

Sometimes it just depends on where you go. I was actually surprised when I sat in the middle of the student section @ the Iowa game last year amidst all those Hawkeye fans and one gave me a real hard time, but I guess they all figured at that time they had nothing really on me after we had dominated them 23-3 the year before.
That said, I never liked Iowa City itself a whole lot, nothing there really appeals to me that much. The campus is a mess (I walked out of my college visit after only a hour after getting a glimpse of the campus, and I was barely interested to begin with, but that put a knife in that). And driving around town the night before drove me nuts trying to find my way around.
