Horrible! First reports I saw this morning said 1 dead and the suspect was in custody. Now -- 22 dead and the suspect has been killed. I realize there is always a "fog" that accompanies developing stories like this, but that's a pretty big discrepancy. I think some prayers for Virginia Tech are in order.

They claim to have shot and killed him. However, classes have been canceled and everyone in the area has been ordered to remain indoors until further notice.

I never have, and never will understand the rationale behind school/office shootings. Odds are, this guy was upset at a specific person and/or professor, and decided to take out as many people as he could. IMO, these people need to learn that their lives do not revolve around school and/or a job.

Didn't something like this (at a much lesser scale) happen at Iowa a few years back? As I recall, a guy who's PhD defense went bad, showed back up with a gun and killed some of the board members or something like that? I was overseas at the time and cant remember the details.

Point is, it can happen anywhere

From what I have heard, the initial shooting took place early this morning and one person was killed. Then the shooter went into a classroom and started firing in there. What a tragedy.

Gang Lu, a PhD candidate in physics, shot and killed 5 people at the University of Iowa before killing himself. Here's a brief account of that incident:

Lu said in the letters that he was angry and jealous that his doctoral dissertation had not received a prestigious academic award. Linhua Shan had received the award.

This is exactly what I meant in my post earlier. He was jealous of one person, and took out 5. School and work are not the epitome of life people. Have fun! Having a 4.0 GPA is not the reason to live and die.
