Sorry, this post just really bugged me

I'm not sure how this post bugged you. I sincerely hope and want us to win 7-8-9 games like none other. As a fan, I'm doing everything I can. I come to each game with a great attitude. That being said, my opinion (which I think I'm still entitled to) is that I think we will be around 500. Having a good attitude does not mean we should all expect the team to win 8-9 games, to me it means we all do our part and come to each game cheering like its a BCS bowl. Not giving up on the team until the clock runs out.

Re: Attitude adjustment needed!

So is me saying that my realistic expectations for the FB this year is 4-5 wins mean I'm writing them off as a failure? I just don't see how anyone can expect bowl eligibility with what they saw Saturday, with how we played last year, and how we lost some of the better players from that team last year and the not as good players from that team are returning as well. We didn't have a recruiting class with a bunch of stud players in it so how can anyone even fathom some of these 7-9 win predictions right now? Don't get me wrong but I would love for that to happen but I'm not getting my hopes up until Chizik and the boys hit the field and show us what they can do in a game.

All you have to look at is how the BB team was almost 3-0 to start the Big 12 and everyone was talking about the NCAA tourney, making a push in the Big 12 and we wound up right were most people thought we would before the season: right around .500.

Football is not a sport you rebuild and turn around overnight. In basketball all you need are a couple very good players and you can change your fortunes quickly. In football you have to get several good players and develop them. I honestly don't think we'll see what everyone is hoping for until about year 3 of the Chizik era. This year we'll have some growing pains of a new system. Next year we hand the QB spot over and lose Blythe and some other key players so we'll be rebuilding at some key positions in year 2 as well although we do have some nice talent at QB to work with at least. I don't think this is negative thinking. I think this is more realistic and those of you thinking 7-9 wins is realistic don't come crying here when reality sets in that you don't turn a bad team into a good one overnight when we don't win as many games as some of you are predicting. You think Hawk fans drink the kool-aide, some of you do the same things sometimes.

Re: Attitude adjustment needed!

I think most people think a 7 or 8 win season is feasible, but a more realistic expectation is 4 or 5 wins. I personally feel that it's important to be reasonable during a rebuilding phase. If you give yourself too much hope it could equate to expectations.

After seeing how some people reacted to the spring game its clear that some people do have high expectations already for this upcoming year. This is dangerous for next seasons financial support. Unfortunately we don't have many boosters in the NFL making seven figures a year to pick up the slack when some fans decide to give up.

I personally think we are talanted enough to be competitive, but I don't think our depth is strong enough to prevail. Coaching will make a HUGE difference, but we still don't know what Chizik can do... He might be worse than McCarney! Wins are nice, but a level head is necessary. Otherwise losses can be so emotionally upsetting that the effect is that you turn your back to the program. I type too much.

Re: Attitude adjustment needed!

It is my opinion that far too many Cyclone fans have set their expectations far too low for Cyclone athletics. I think too many of us are OK with being mediocre and every few years hoping for a great season.

Personally, I would rather be like KU where they are disappointed with sweet 16 appearances. We jump for joy at sweet 16 appearances...how great it would be if we expected it every year (and the publicity that goes with a team of this caliber)!

Don't be scared of being great Cyclone fans...embrace it!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Re: Attitude adjustment needed!

My original post didn't say that we could win 9 games by being positive. What I said was that too many fans are on this site and others are writing off the season from watching the spring game. Everything doesn't look like BCS so we complain that everything is terrible and will only get worse. It would be nice if a few more could see young men playing to a standoff because they are all making progress. A positive attitude will cause more people (including potential recruits) to buy in to what Pollard is trying to accomplish. I'm just saying what I believe, right or wrong. Last time I looked that was still permissable.

Re: Attitude adjustment needed!

A lot can change in a college sports program when a university, it's donors, it's directors, it's coaches, it's players, and it's fans all have the same high expectations and goals that lead them to success.

Some programs run on exhaust fumes of old glory days and tradition (Nebraska), some programs MAKE their own glory days and tradition.

Having high expectations for you team certainly helps, but so does having realistic ones. There is also certainly a difference between just thinking your team is only going to go .500, and showing up to every game anyways and sticking it out until the end, be it bitter or sweet.

I forget who already said it, but I agree showing up and supporting your team the WHOLE game is more important than wether you think they're gonna win or lose

I guess I am realistically expecting a 4-5 win season but I can guarantee Chizik is gunning to win them all. Maybe we will surprise some people and win 7. I think most fans plan on supporting the team no matter what this year and having bigger expectations for the near future.

We need to get to a sweet 16 more than twice in 30 years before we start expecting it... baby steps.

During and right after the season fans were screaming for the heads of Cory and Ross. But now their gone and most are crying that next years team will be terrible because we've lost their experience. The point is if we're going to have winning teams we need winning and not whining fans. Have faith that our coaches know what their doing and that the players are working to be their best, for themselves and the fans.
LOSING BREEDS APATHY............Those great fans you talk of over in iowa city were very apathetic in the late sixties and all of the seventies when WE er ISU were going to four bowl games in ten years and Earle Bruce was winning 24 games in three years!! (1976..1977..& 1978)

As long as ISU is LOSING it will breed apathy and the only thing that stops the apathy is WINNING over the LONG TERM!!!!
