Re: Put yourself in Chizik's place..what do you do?

There are two things he should be doing:

    1) setting the disciplinary rules and guidelines up-front (ie: before things happen).
    2) establishing a team-leader based disciplinary rules board to enforce the rules and guidelines (peer pressure is the best pressure).

Hopefully, he did this before these circumstances occurred...it will make it much easier to deal with the situation if he did.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Gene did not appear too happy in the parade at VEISHA. Looked worn or somewhat tense. His wife appeared more at ease. Maybe not his thing. Saw his 3 little kids. Ames is a good place for elementary schools....

Saw about 12 of his players on the firetruck including Austad and Berg.

No bball team players in the parade except for the gals.

The danceline had some good fball recruits....

Kermit the Frog was dragging his feet in the wind.

The Alpha Sigma Phi cannon was leading the parade.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style.

Chizik looked pretty content when I saw him. Also, there were a number of basketball players from the men's team in the parade. Some were riding the truck, and some were walking along with it (at least when I saw them).

Some of the players looked like they were having fun but I have to say some of our players (especially the girls) didn't look like they were having fun at all... it was rather sad. I was standing on the steps of Beardshear, so the one place you need to look your best they were pouting like we were ruining their day. Maybe they just don't like the hype but...

Chizik looked fine when I saw him go by

I saw men's and women's basketball players... each seemed to be having a pretty good time. Same goes for the football players.

I think how he handles these first situations will set the tone for the program. Yes everyone makes mistakes, however not all of us get a full ride to ISU. The student-athlete is held to a higher standard than a normal student. Fair or not that is the way it is. I say stay out of trouble or go home.

I really like the thought of setting an example for players... but the more I think about it... it seems like it could never work... you maybe set an example for the guys currently on the team... so 25% of the guys who will be here 3 more years, 25% guys who will be here two more years, and 25% guys who will be here one more year, and the rest are all graduating anyway... but guys you haven't recruited yet to your team... so three years later... nobody on the team has seen this example you've set... heck one year later... 25% of the guys haven't seen an example of players getting kicked off the team... so it all seems pointless in the end.

There needs to be consideration for giving some kids a second chace in order for the coaches to have the opportunity to positively affect them, each situation is unique and should be handled on a case-by-case basis.

One thing that has really impressed me about Chizik so far is his absolute commitment to running an ethical program that truly aims on helping the athletes become better people. At this point, I trust Chizik's decision-making in this area.
I agree completely. Each case and each kid is a unique situation. It is important to establish an attitude, but I think if he uses this situation solely to do that, he could send the message that he doesn't care about the individual players.

The players probably have a pretty good feel for their teammates, much as some of us have a pretty good feel for some of our co-workers. Sometimes a guy or gal will screw up, and you think, wow, I can't believe they did that. They've always had it together for the most part. Then the next person will screw up, and you know that it fits in with what you have seen of them.

It would be discouraging to see either type of person get the same treatment regardless of their past history.

Re: Put yourself in Chizik's place..what do you do?

The problem is, he is in a no win situation when it comes to the discipline of stupid stuff like this. How many people thought McCarney should have looked the other way for Berrymen's last bit of trouble. Was that because he was an all Big 12 performer? Now I hear that only one of the players has Big 12 ability so he should make an example out of them. The key to good discipline is to set up something that can be used for the best players as well as the worst. That is a tough line to draw. Good luck coach with whatever the decision is. Then we as fans need to support it no matter who the player is in the future.
