Put yourself in Chizik's place..what do you do?

As a new head coach who preaches discipline, what do you do with athletes who have broken the law? In my view Chizik knows:
1. He has to set an example, no BS under his reign
2. 2007 will not be the break-through year for Iowa State. Schedule is against it
3. He has time to do the job for ISU
With all of that, I would be very harsh on athletes that break the law, send a message and go get my players for the future. Any thoughts on this?

Gotta stand up at the beginning and lay down the law. If you let your 3 year old get away with it enough, they will never listen again. These are just 15 years older, but not much more responsible.

I agree with you guys - he's gotta let them know that they can't get away from this sort of thing. Chizik coached under Brown at Texas, and they usually don't take any BS down there. I wouldn't be surprised to see these guys kicked off the team.

Actually DMac did the same thing when he first came to Ames. Had a few problems with a few players and cut them loose to set an example.

You have to establish the boundry right now. Leave no question where it is. Players know exactly what happens, and decisions make themselves when it's all out in the open.

Everybody has said bounce the player, will you be calling for a new coach if he doesn't? My point is let Chizik coach, why don't we stick to seconding guessing once he's been here for a minute.

Booting guys also gives him a chance to improve the team, with his own recruits.

Let's say he runs the recent three jokers, maybe one of whom is a legit Big 12 player. He now has three more scholarships with which to work with, three more chances to help the team with guys he recruits. No lose situation.

Just curious why all of these posts are straight out calling for them to be removed from the team for one offense? On the other hand GMac we are debating whether to keep Taylor on a third offense. Both are relatively new coaches. IMO, we should be trying to build a school standard that is not sport specific. I am sure JP is letting his coaches make the decisions but I also think he will have some sort of influence.

Good call - while it's important to let coaches work with their players and make decisions that are best for the team, having different standards for every sport probally makes it harder to maintain discipline and gives people different impressions.

Irregardless of what the standards are set to be though (zero tolerance vs some forgiveness), it needs to be tougher than the current ones. Seems like as soon as we resolve one situation, someone else is in trouble

Dont dismiss them. Physically beat them down into the ground with extra workouts. Make them prove they want to be responsible. Make them run till they puke for a month.

Then offer a second chance.

I agree with the sentiment that we have to immediately establish code of conduct that represents the University well and doesn't allow for any possiblity of impropriety.

But, we do need to remember that most head coaches are also trying to help these kids become good people as well as good football players. There needs to be consideration for giving some kids a second chace in order for the coaches to have the opportunity to positively affect them, each situation is unique and should be handled on a case-by-case basis.

One thing that has really impressed me about Chizik so far is his absolute commitment to running an ethical program that truly aims on helping the athletes become better people. At this point, I trust Chizik's decision-making in this area.

I agree with phoria, every case is different. Sometimes people can be innocent and get caught up in the wrong crowd. Sometimes your buddy might get in a fight with a bunch of punks and you jump in to help. This could result in any number of violations. It is certainly alot different than if you had been running your mouth all night and provoking a fight as well.

With that said, these guys aren't Chiziks, he doesn't know their character or background any better than we do probably. If he lets one stay and it turns out to be a bad decision it could definately give the wrong impression to the guys he recruits for himself.

If this is one minor mistake, I think there should be some tough discipline. It will be hard to recruit, if the incoming kids think there is no allowance for a mistake.
