Worst local sportscaster bias against Cyclones

I seldom watch the local Iowa sports coverage since the coverage generally stinks. But as I was flipping through channels last night I saw the local Mason City CBS sports as they were fawning over the EIU prospects in Saturday's NFL draft. I've noticed over the years that they spend way too much time on the other school and hardly any time on ISU. I know that some of this is historical momentum but I get sick of it.

Do other local TV stations sports newcasters spend much more time talking about the black and gold team than the Cyclones?

What are the worst local Iowa TV stations that spend almost no time on their local news to cover the Cyclones sports teams?

Try living in Cedar Rapids and finding good media coverage of Iowa State! Impossible! Thank goodness for the internet and this wonderful site!

I don't know, Keith Murphy isn't too bad.

I would say that the Des Moines news outlets are fairly balanced in their coverage but if there are headlines for both ISU and Iowa at the same time I'm sure you can guess who gets first billing. Not 100% of the time, mind you, but enough to be irritating.

Keith Murphy isn't bad at all, in my opinion...

KGAN in CR is pathetic. KCRG does a decent job but thats only because they have some of the better reporters.

Some People see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say why not? When I took this job I said why not Iowa State? Why not winning? Why not bowl games? Why not sell outs? Why not national respect? Why not us? Why not here? Why not the cyclone family?

Re: Worst local sportscaster bias against Cyclones

The TV stations here in Des Moines do a good job I think. And Keith Murphy and Andy Fales have had plenty of Iowa bashing rants at times, especially with Alford so don't really feel that anything really stands out in that aspect. The Rag is terrible with ISU though, definately an EIU biased paper I think.

Re: Worst local sportscaster bias against Cyclones

Ironically, the media outlets in the Quad Cities are fairly "fair" in their reporting of the 'clones, considering how close we are to Iowa City. WQAD, a TV station in Moline, ILLINOIS, is by far the most unbiased, and if the news from ISU is bigger (i.e., if we were to smoke Texas/Oklahoma later this year), would trump any of the other sports stories of the day. KWQC in Davenport is more biased toward EIU but at least we're on the level of U of Illinois. Then there's WKBF - the flagship station for the Cyclone Radio Network in the Quad Cities. Any broadcast of Cyclone athletics will be trumped if the Quad City Swing (Class A Midwest League), Quad City Mallards (UHL Hockey), or Quad City Steamwheelers (AF2) are in action. I can't confirm this, but I believe they would also trump the Cyclones with the Quad City RiverHawks (ABA). Our Cyclones are often trumped by HIGH SCHOOL SPORTING EVENTS!!! What's the point of being the Cyclone Radio Network flagship station if you're gonna trump the broadcast with HIGH SCHOOL EVENTS??? Basically, I give the odds of actually catching a Cyclone broadcast at 35%, and really never count on listening to them on the radio

Re: Worst local sportscaster bias against Cyclones

North Iowa doesn't have much of a choice. KIMT in Mason City is the CBS affiliate and they are the only TV station that shows Iowa college sports coverage. ABC is Austin, Minnesota and NBC is Rochester, Minnesota. There is absolutely no Big-12 coverage in Minnesota.

KIMT is awful at coverage for ISU.

I think the local sports are covered pretty good around here. Everyone that works at Channel 5 hates the Hawkeyes.

Re: Worst local sportscaster bias against Cyclones

Based on the level of coverage that the Cedar Rapids media outlets gave the Cyclones when I was growing up there, you wouldn't have even known that Iowa State had an athletic program. Heck, even Coe College got more press than the Cyclones in CR.

Re: Worst local sportscaster bias against Cyclones

My favorite part of the CR media (I grew up there too), was that Iowa never lost, they just didn't win.
