I'm having flashbacks to the floods of '93. I was in Ames for the weekend, intending to head back home on Sunday afternoon and get back to my summer job. The floods closed off virtually every road surrounding Ames, and I was stuck there for a couple of extra days. Not that I'm complaining -- two more days to hang out and drink beer with my friends -- but the floods were pretty disastrous for the city and the whole state. I sure hope it doesn't get to that level again.

Everyone in the United States has heard of John O'Donnell Stadium and the mental image that goes with that is a small minor-league baseball stadium in the middle of a rushing river

In 93 I was working a summer job with the Marshalltown School District as an electrician. We had a school with a really old boileroom and the thing had over 5 feet of water in it. The sump pumps failed and for my $5/hour, I got to go into the room and feel my way around to find them and get them fixed/replaced. NASTY.
Then, later that summer, when the water had been removed, I got to go into the steam tunnels and use a fire hose to blow the mud/crap out of them.

I have a lot of friends who lived there when the floods hit. It seemed like the whole state of Iowa was underwater in the summer of '93. But Ames got its share, too. When I was stranded there, my friends and I drove around where we could to see the results of the floods. The Iowa State Center was essentially sitting in the middle of a brand new lake, and floor of Hilton was completely underwater. Crazy times...
