The days of Dan Gable, Chris Taylor, Peterson were on Number One ranked ISU teams for years. Is the day coming with ISU dominance once again. It should be our rightful place in wrestling!

Just an FYI, I don't think we can really claim to "own" wrestling, not even inside of Iowa borders. Iowa, Oklahoma, and Okie State all have a lot more NC's than we do in wrestling.

I think the natural order of things is Iowa State Number one in wrestling. Dan Gable was our guy...we let him get away. That's how Iowa got their titles. By the way,I got bounced from a bar by Chris Taylor. I did not argue.

I agree that Gable got Iowa all their titles, but that doesn't have anything to do with OSU and Oklahoma having more than both of us. We should be #1 in the state, at all times, and that's the first priority for me, since Iowa schools alwas have a big impact on the NCAA tourney in March. I'd rather lose to Iowa and win an NC, but just remember that the Oklahoma schools have the most NC's, not an Iowa school. That was what I was getting at more or less.

Do we have a decent shot at Number one next year?

Well I would agrue that we returned to the national view last year. It was our first top 5 finish in like 5 years. Our first B12 title in 20 years.
Can we contend for the National Title next year? Hell, yes. Will we win it? Unlikely. We are going to be so young next year that I will be very pleased with a top 3 finish and I am expected a top 5 finish.
Just be patient. Minnesota is going to be dominant next year and Iowa will be vastly improved. Just be patient. In two or three years we will be close to unbeatable.
| Some People see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say why not? When I took this job I said why not Iowa State? Why not winning? Why not bowl games? Why not sell outs? Why not national respect? Why not us? Why not here? Why not the cyclone family? |

Oklahoma State - 34
Iowa - 20
Iowa State - 8
Oklahoma - 7
We have only one more title than Oklahoma, but they haven't won one since 1973 or 1974, so we've actually had more recent traditionl.

I knew we were like the top 4 universities with huge wrestling traditions. I was trying to say what you illustrated, we haven't been at the top in wrestling.... either for a long time or ever.

ISU's wrestling tradition really is solid. We have the most dual meet wins all-time, and there was a stretch under Harold Nichols in the late 60's and early 70's when ISU was definitely the premier wrestling school in the country. Also, it doesn't show up in figures of championships won, but ISU was in second place for a whole lot of those Oklahoma State and Iowa titles. Take that for what it's worth, but what it does mean is that ISU has been consistently among the top 2 or 3 programs in the country for most of its existence.

I did the math. Since 1956, Nichols third year coaching ISU, our team has averaged a national championship finish of 4.961, or 5th.
The reason I started at 1956 is the ISU site is either incomplete, or hopefully there were years they didn't do team placing. Coaches and Records - CYCLONES.com—The Official Web Site of Iowa State University Athletics | |

I have a feeling you're already aware of this, but anyway, if you go to Cyclones.com then click on Sports, then wrestling team, then Media Guide, you get to see the entire history of ISU wrestling. I'm not sure if it has NCAA place finishes or not though.
