Re: Q & A with Assistant Athletic Director Mary Pink
Personally I wasn't a fan of Jeff Johnson leading game day cheers. I'm all about cheering, in fact I think some of the cheerleaders hate me because at times I do a better job of leading cheers than they do (They should also thank me though, because I usually help pick up their cheers)
However I think it gives the wrong impression when we have to have someone on the field with a microphone telling people to cheer... or someone coming on the PA system to let fans know that it's almost game time and they should start making their way to their seats (Though I like the concept of the sirens and count down)
The one thing I could hope for from Jeff is that his leading cheers for a year or two evolves into the fans eventually taking over it and doing it spontaneously (I mean the student section will from time to time, but we need the rest of the stadium in on that)

You are exactly right. You do the cheers using signals with cy and have the announcer help people along. Put johnson on a mike where you can't see him but are watching CY. After a while you do not need Johnson at all.
I would simplify some of the cheers so that they can follow signals. Utilize the band as well.
I literally hate the "What ya gonna do" line. I would simply chant ISU a couple of times and lose that. I do like that the students appear to do the dance and it looks good on TV. Saw it at basketball games on TV.
