The Cubs are in Second place!
It's about time. They're starting to come around. -

Re: The Cubs are in Second place!
They're not there yet, and won't be for a while....
But they are playing REALLY, REALLY well, and that's what has me excited.

Re: The Cubs are in Second place!
This is the Cubs team that we all thought would start the season. If the pitching struggles then we have the fire power of the offense to keep us in games. The excitement is growing in Chicago! Now lets just hope the Bulls can pull off the upset of the Pistons!

But they are playing REALLY, REALLY well, and that's what has me excited. Exactly. Last year's team would have folded up the tent and gone home after Zambrano's less than stellar first inning. They came back from a 4-0 deficit and much of it with two outs. Still awhile to go, but good news.

Re: The Cubs are in Second place!
For all those that made fun of the Jason Marquis signing, he's looking like a steal so far. 5-1 with a 1.70 ERA. It's too bad Zambrano is off to a slow start, look at the rest of the rotation:
Zambrano: 3-2 5.80 ERA 29K
Lilly: 2-2 2.78 ERA 42K
Hill: 4-1 1.73 ERA 33K
Marquis 5-1 1.70 ERA 24K
Guzman (only 1 start though) 0-0 2.19 ERA 11 K's in 12.1 innings.
The Brewers are playing like the team to beat in the central right now but the Cubs keep playing they way they are right now and they should make it a good race.

I hope this is Rich Hill's year. He's a great guy that has been waiting for his permanent stay in the show.

Re: The Cubs are in Second place!
Marquis had another strong start last night, complete game 3 hit shut out. IIRC, the Pirates didn't get their first hit until the 6th.

Re: The Cubs are in Second place!
As much as I did not like retaining Rothschild, he does get credit for turning Hill around last season after he had that rough first stint in Chicago. I think he sent him back to Iowa and told him to read some book that was supposed to help Hill with the mental aspect of pitching and ever since then he's been lights out. Kid has a nasty curve ball. He's also turned Marquis around too. Apparently Larry found a flaw in his mechanics last season and they worked on it in the offseason after they signed him and well so far whatever it was it's definately working. I read something the other week that even Jason will not say what it is they fixed because they don't want to give hitters any advantage on why his delivery is different than it was last year.
This team definately has a new swagger under Lou. No more excuses, they went out and got some pitching so they don't have to rely on Wood and Prior and we don't hear anymore of this "well it was a tough loss but that's why we play 162 games" crap that Baker said all the time. If the Cubs lost and played bad Lou calls them out on it and says it's unacceptable and he'll play someone that is playing better if they don't turn it around. Theriot is the perfect example. He's playing just as well as anyone on the team and he was supposed to be the utility guy but now he's starting at SS and if they give DeRosa a day off or play him in RF they move Theriot to 2B to keep him in the lineup.

I'm cheering for the Bulls but the Pistons DOMINATED them the first two games.

The Cubs have a lot of weapons and Pinella is a good coach. It is interesting that the Brew Crew and Cubbies have similar schedules for the rest of the month:
The Brewers schedule: @ the Mets; @ the Phils (a Jekyll & Hyde team); Minnesota; @Dodgers; @ SD and then Atlanta + 1 game vs Florida. If they can go 6-6 in their match-ups with LA, NY, Atl & SD and win the Phils series 3-1 and the Twins series I'll consider May to be successful - anything more than that is just icing on the cake.
The Cubbies schedule: @Phila; @Mets; White Sox; @SD; @LAD & Florida. Could be an extremely telling month for determining who's "in it to win it."
Utah Utes, Illinois Illini. The University of Pennsylvania thought about following this pattern by calling themselves the Pennsylvania Pencils. However, they were afraid their students would start chanting "We're No. 2"
