Grant Gibbs
On another site's free message board, there are rumors that we offered a 6'4" or 6'5" combo guard from Lin-Mar, Grant Gibbs. By my estimation, we have four available scholarships for '08, and we have something of an abundance of guards coming in to the program already (four this year, two already for next season) it seems a bit excessive. Lucca Staiger's high school coach thinks he projects more as a SF than a SG, but even then, that would be a lot of guards brought into the program and that would leave only one more scholarship available for a big guy. I'm not one to question McD and I love Iowa kids...but that seems a bit excessive to me.

Re: Grant Gibbs
I think we'll see more of this type of recruiting rather than less. We need to stabilize the player turnover problem or it will kill us. Get a base of stable four-year guys and supplement it with the best talent you can bring in.

Re: Grant Gibbs
No way is that true (imho). K. Williams of Kennedy is a better D1 prospect in Cedar Rapids.
I stand corrected. I'll have to watch Gibbs closely this year. I live in Marion. I was always impressed with Printy but Gibbs was no pushover.

Look at the 04-05 Texas Tech squad with Jarius Jackson, Ronald Ross, and Daryl Dora. Some schools go through rebuilding years after losing an alliteration here and there, but Coach Knight reloads. I'm hoping in a few years we'll have guys like Grant Gibbs, Jamarcus Johnson, Tyson Thomas, and Allen Anderson.

Re: Grant Gibbs
are we going to end up in the Missouri Valley Conference?

Re: Grant Gibbs
Ugh. Hopefully this isn't our first choice.

Re: Grant Gibbs
From Jerry Meyer -
"Grant Gibbs – Martin Brothers Select's 6-foot-4 point guard is awful similar to Maryland point guard Eric Hayes. He has a sweet handle and does an excellent job finding the open man in transition while also being able to keep the defense honest with his ability to connect on shots from the perimeter."
If you look at his profile, he has been contacted by us, Iowa, Wisconsin, Washington St... maybe he looks small time now but he has big time programs looking at him, and it's not like McD hasn't offered players and we've seen their stock skyrocket before.
I have no questions about the offer other than I don't think Guard is going to be a need position.

Re: Grant Gibbs
Why does he look like a mid-major recruit? Almost every offer Mac has made to a younger player has turned out to be a very solid offer.

Re: Grant Gibbs
My impression would be that McD knows he can't compete for high star players late in the game. So, he sends his recruiters out to find talent before others do and if the guy looks legit, he offers. There is just no other way McD can play in the sandbox. If we offer a guy that already has an offer from Kansas, Duke, etc, we won't get him.
I know nothing about Gibbs but my bet would be he is better than most know and McD wants in early.

Re: Grant Gibbs
I am just curious how many of you who are ripping on Gibbs have seen him play? Accuse me of drinking the McDermott Kool-Aid, but I will trust his judgment at this point and like the prospect of a guard with that kind of size.

This kid still has another year to improve. He may look "M.V.C." to some the way he is now, but he has time to sharpen his skills.
