Greatest ISU Wrestler of all time?

This is really tough for me...Sanderson or Gable? I'd probably go with Gable for his achievements after college, but Sanderson for his college record. What do you wrestling heads think? Honorable mention for Chris Taylor.

Re: Greatest ISU Wrestler of all time?

Is this really an honest question? It's no question at all that it's Sanderson. The man never lost!!!! That's like asking who has more money Bill Gates or a homeless guy?

Wrestler? Cael hands down, although DG was a special wrestler as well. Had Gable been able to compete for 4 years, he may have lost one in that year, we will never know.

Coaching? Remains to be seen, but DG is the best all time as of this moment. I don't think anyone will ever equal iowa's run, as the wrestling landscape has changed quite a lot and there are many more teams that can now contend for points at nationals. Overall OSU has had much more success than iowa, but iowa had an unprecedented continuous run.

In my opinion,

Best college wrestler = Sanderson

Biggest impact individual on modern day wrestling = Gable

Also, Dan's 1972 Olympic performance in my opinion was the greatest display of dominance in the sport in our lifetime.

Just a quick blurb on Dan...

Gable pinned sixty of the last sixty-five opponents he faced in college, and he would not lose a match until he faced Larry Owings of the University of Washington in the NCAA finals his senior year. As a college wrestler, Gable amassed an outstanding record of 99-1, which included two NCAA championship titles. Gable would get another chance to wrestle Owings during the 1972 Olympic trials. Gable beat him handily, 7-1.

It's the unstoppable force vs. the immovable object. No way to tell, both were outstanding.

Agreed both outstanding, but in my opinion, Cael Sanderson may be the best athlete of all time. His record is unblemished.

I have to go with Gable because of the influence he had on the sport in his day. He was a phenomenal wrestler that dominated everyone he faced. A real hard-nosed "I'm gonna kick your @$$" wrestler.

And just to question everyone that is saying it's not even close (going to Cael), why isn't it close? Gable lost his last match at ISU, and Cael won his. That's the only difference between their collegiate records. So why isn't it close? One loss?

When Dan was at Weterloo West in 1965, his sister was murdered. It was a terrible tragedy that he had to fight through. He started as 95 pounder and always seemed to pin his opponent. I do not think he lost in high school. He just outworked everyone,

Re: Greatest ISU Wrestler of all time?

Each wrestler has their impact on collegiate and world/Olympic wrestling. For a collegiate career, I would give it a toss up. Gable straight up wrestler, relentless. Cael, enjoyed a red-shirt year which helps but he was a masterful technician, very controlled and as Gable...dominant. Only one loss seperated the two.

World stage Gable...even the Russians feared him.

Coaching has to go with Gable today, however Cael will continue to grow and his coaching style will challenge all records as he and his teams improve. My feelings are the Gable "mystic" is diminished with todays youth. Their parents keep it ingrained. Cael, is known as the "Professor" for good reasons...he is a teacher, the new iconic figure of goaching.

Todays eadge to Gable, in time I would have to place them side by side, ISU is still the alum of both and ISU and it's alumni should be proud of each. Gable had to go where the job was.

But, for my support - Go Caels Cyclones.
