    Re: Johnny Orr Floor?

ISU basketball wouldn't be what it is today if Johnny Orr had not came to ISU. He put ISU on the map in the 80's and paved the way for Floyd and Eustachy and McDermott to come to ISU.

Hilton Magic was created b/c of Orr. Johnny Orr Court is appropriate.

Who cares if he put us on the map? Build a statue or hang a banner but to name the floor after him is not right. People who win CHAMPIONSHIPS get their name on the floor. Example: Coach K or Pat Sutton.

Jamie Pollard has already told me that he won't put a name on the floor, he needs to keep it free for advertising space and such, but he is looking to honor Johnny Orr in another way. It would be awesome though, I had the idea and sent it, but that is what he said.

Ugghh. That just conjures up images of the "O'Reilley Auto Parts" ads on the floor at Texas Tech.

Conjures up bad memories of the thread on this board a while ago about selling the naming rights of JTS to "Ugly Fat Girls Serving Bad Food".....er I mean Hooters.

I will be seriously ****** if they put advertising on the court like TTech. It looks horrible. I know funding is important, but don't sell your soul. They should put a Bronze statue of Johnny pumping his fist outside of Hilton.

As far as Pete, I had emailed JP about the press box or naming something after him, and he said that there were rules about how soon after someone's death that something can be named after someone.

Let's wait another 20 years, and after multiple Big 12 championships and Final Fours we can name it McDermott Court.

I believe the university rule is 5 years. However, someone fast-tracked the name on the friggin' Jischke Honors Building. Ridiculous.

That aside, it would probably also require approval/consent from Pete's family before his name was attached to anything. And I can't believe Pete would want his name attached to the press box at JTS without a serious overhaul.

That thing had so many corners cut during construction I'm surprised it isn't round. It's only 10 years old and is already woefully behind as far as meeting the needs of the working folks up there. No forethought whatsoever.

If the opportunity exists to make money with advertising it will happen... Pollard has made that sufficiently clear in all the NCC communications over the past year.

Until an advertiser (with $) show up, however, I would suggest "Pollard's Legacy".

Seriously, if it's all about money we will not have an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of past coaches/players/annoucers unless the big contributor(s) say that is what they want. We have to get used to that...

As if he actually did anything noteworthy or worthwhile at ISU. As far as I remember, the only things he did was turn VEISHEA drier than a desert and drive around in his Lexus waving to freezing students walking to class in -20 degree weather. Geoffrey's left a legacy in the time he's been there.

I have a friend who's a Purdue grad who says he's been an excellent president there. Purdue can have him...

    Break 'em.

IMO, this is about as easy a decision JP will ever make at ISU.

Is that only as memorials for dead people?

Last I checked Jischke was still alive as are the Jacobson's who have their name attached to buildings at ISU, UNI, & EIU.

"In 1976, Dick established the Richard O. Jacobson Foundation. His foundation has given away more than 20 million dollars over the years, in addition to many more millions that he has given personally. His generosity helped build buildings that bear his name at The University of Iowa, Iowa State University, University of Northern Iowa, Drake University, Grand View College, Exchange City, Youth and Shelter Services, Special Olympics of Iowa, Science Center of Iowa, Orchard Place, and numerous others."
