Save your yearning for a crab cake for a trip to Annapolis if you go...multiple places are better than any in DC.
From Crystal City you are near Arlington National Cementary.....it is Memorial Day and it will have Flags on every Grave. Served with Honor Guard there 2 years, Tomb of Unknown. Lots to see but the crowds will be immense anywhere you go.
Yeah, the Smithsonian for sure. I went there back in high school, and we were only able to stay for about 4 hours. It easily would require a full day to see half of it. Arlington National Cemetary is really awe inspiring, and the ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns is something that every American should see at least once.
You need to see the monuments at night, the Holocaust museum, the changing of the guard at Arlington cemetary too.
No report back to us on the vacation?? Come on!!
Yea...me too...I'm goin to DC in two weeks on my trip and want to know what was good and what wasn't....
Sorry...we got back late Tuesday and I found out I had strep throat yesterday morning - wasn't feeling great once we got home. I don't think I've ever had strep before and would rather not have it again - ever.
Briefly on the trip...it was great!
Thursday we went into DC at night. Saw the Washington Monument, WWII Memorial and Lincoln Memorial. That new WWII Memorial is amazing. The other 2 still look great lit up.
Friday we went back into DC and saw...the Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian, Spy Museum, Ford's Theater, ate at the Hard Rock Cafe, Vietnam War Memorial, Korean War Memorial and saw the north side of the White House. They had the walkway on the south side blocked off - wouldn't even let anyone into the Ellipse area. Looked like they were doing some sort of drill with the presidential helicopter - as it kept landing at the White House and staying for a few minutes then going back up and around the Washington Monument, land at the White House, etc.
Saturday we went up to Baltimore and saw the Aquarium and harbor area - fantastic. Ate at the Hard Rock Cafe - got 2 hurricane glasses in one trip! (we're Hard Rock Cafe hurricane cup collectors - up to 8 now and pilsners from 4 others that her brother brought back for us). We went out and had a good time Saturday too. :)
Sunday I'll admit the previous days/evenings activities got the best of us and we didn't do much at all.
Monday was probably our favorite day. We had to choose between seeing Arlington Cemetery on Memorial day or making sure we saw both the Udvar-Hazy Center and Great Falls. We chose the latter.
The "other" Air and Space museum was fantastic! Just some amazing things in there and most were lit up just perfect for photos. I think we took about 200 on just Monday alone between the museum and
Great Falls! Wow...perfect day to go out there, we got there in the afternoon after the museum. Not a huge crowd at the lookouts which was nice. What's also just as nice to see are the walkways and small creek that runs along the falls. Took some great photos here. Capped the night off with a nice dinner at the District Chophouse. We ate at the Denver Chophouse last November, so we wanted to hit up the one in DC. It was very good yet we liked the Denver Chophouse much better.
Tuesday we made a quick trip out to Arlington Cemetery before we had to leave. Walked through it and up to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Got there at the perfect time as we only waited a few minutes for the next changing of the guard. Also watched a new (what I call) dedication ring go up from a middle school. That was just as big of a deal as the changing of the guard - very neat!
Didn't get to make it to Williamsburg/Jamestown and I think we could've substituted the Baltimore trip for that in hindsight - the aquarium was good yet not great. Tried to tour the FBI building yet it was closed - renovations just started there. Wanted to tour the Pentagon yet it's like the White House - gotta obtain entrance from your state folks long in advance.
All in all though - a great trip. May post photos in the gallery at some point. I shot everything in raw so it may take a bit for me to get everything touched up and converted - even with using Lightroom. I have over 550 photos to process!
Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions. As you can see, we followed many of them and they didn't lead us astray. Especially pleased with the Udvar-Hazy Center and Great Falls - would've never been on our radar without CF!
What? No trip to the Crystal City Restaurant?! :wink0st:
Glad you enjoyed the trip. DC is still one of my favorite cities. Also glad you hit Great Falls. It's probably my favorite off-the-beaten-path destination in the DC area. I'd love to see the photos if you get a chance to post them on this site.
We meant to make it there yet it never happened. It would've been our destination Thursday night if we had not spent too much time in DC and our only option once we got back was a ravaging of McDonalds. I don't think I've ever been so hungry and ate so much crap in my life.
