Johnson turns down Titans, will retire

ESPN link

Keyshawn Johnson has declined an offer from the Tennessee Titans and has decided to retire. The wide receiver is expected to announce his decision at a Wednesday afternoon news conference.

Sources told ESPN.com's Michael Smith that Johnson will pursue a career in television.

Johnson, who turns 35 in July, was released by the Carolina Panthers earlier this month after the Panthers drafted Southern California wideout Dwayne Jarrett. He had 70 catches for 815 yards and four touchdowns for Carolina in 2006.

Johnson, the No. 1 pick in the 1996 NFL draft, has started 162 of 167 games in his 11 NFL seasons that spans stints with Carolina, Dallas, Tampa Bay and the New York Jets. He has 814 career receptions.

He worked as an analyst on ESPN's televised coverage of the the NFL draft last month.

Keyshawn was very good on the draft coverage. He will do just fine on TV, now if we can just get rid of Deon!

Re: Johnson turns down Titans, will retire

I agree he was good...I just thought he had another year or two left in him. When I read that the Titans were looking at him, thought he'd be a nice receiver for Young - guy he could depend on to do the dirty work across the middle.

Maybe that's what they wanted and he wasn't willing to do that in his final years. Or he just couldn't pass up the dollars in the TV deal. Who knows...
