JoPa making his team clean the stadium after games. Awesome

here is a link to the story. Now this coach has integrity. Not just preaching it.

Wonder how that will affect recruiting this summer??

I'm sure potential recruits love the idea that they'll be trash collectors after the games.

Hmmm....Penn State or West Virginia?? Take out the trash or live with it?

That's awesome to see, frankly. Good for him. If only more coaches in this country- in any sport, but certainly football- would hold their students to that level of personal responsibility.

Q: How does paterno have integrity to punishing guys that weren't involved in the incident?

A: He doesn't.

Hope it kills his recruiting.

I heard we tried this with Mike Taylor but he was stealing empty cans to pay for his cold medicine habit.

What do Cyclone fans and Hawkeye fans have in common?
Neither one ever attended the University of Iowa.

Nice job Joe. Many say you're crazy and sometimes you are.

Yet this just shows how much running a clean program means to you. Many could take a page from your book.

I thought he made a great case to punish the whole team. They didn't stop it. Many parents would love to have him be a father figure to their kids.

Well, that may be a better comparison. But anyway, I respect him for what he did.

Exactly.

If a couple recruits go elsewhere just because they have to help clean a stadium...so what? Clearly Joe doesn't want those types of guys anyway - those thinking just because they strap it up on Saturdays - they're above others.

I'd be surprised to find out this has a negative impact on recruiting. It's still Penn State! And for right now, it's still Paterno as the coach. Kids dream to play there and for him. Fathers dream of their sons playing for him.

Those that can't handle doing a little community type work now and then to help give back to those that support them - maybe that says a lot about them and not just off the field.

Most guys unwilling to make sacrifices off the field are hesitant or unwilling to do so on the field too.

He's sending a big messaged to current guys and recruits. Personally, I love it.

Joe is absolutely correct in handing out this punnishment to the team, and he's right about the lack of leadership that let things get out of hand. I know you gotta protect your own, but rounding up a posse to go duke it out with some a-holes is probably not a fight you want to go looking for.

I still think if some of our own guys had stepped up and showed some leadership during last year's off season, we may have been able to have a standout DE still on the team last Fall. All they had to do was tell him to go home, wait two weeks to turn 21 and then come back.

I agree 100%. While Berryman made his bed all on his own and I don't blame those around him for his mistakes, a bit more team self-discipline would've gone a long way.

Penn State isn't the only coach that seems to share that mentality - ours does too. While our players are not scheduled to clean the stadium...I highly doubt Chizik will turn a blind eye to situations like the one that happened with the PSU players.

Oh bullroar. Why would you punish guys who were out of town during the incident, for example? Or sick? Or studying? I'd walk and tell joepa to eat the corn out of my poo.

It won't kill his recruiting. It will help it. Parents will want their kids to play for him and encourage those kids towards PSU. The potential trouble makers who don't want to deal with discipline will go somewhere else and screw up that program.

Win-Win for JoePa...

Because it's a TEAM thing. The team wasn't stepping up to keep themselves in line. JoePa said it's a lack of leadership, and you're going to fix a lack of leadership by punishing the whole team. It sends a message to everyone on the team by punishing everyone. Hopefully by punishing everyone all team members keep that in the back of their mind so they're more willing to police themselves instead of facing another team punishment.

And this is nothing new. Team punishments occurred on my HS football team, whether it was running hills on a cold and rainy day for someone smoking on the bus on the way home from a game (and no one giving him up), or everyone doing up-downs because someone made a mistake during practice.
