Alright... the opinion everybody has been waiting for... dbronco7sc's.
Okay... so really nobody cares what I think... but I still want to put in my 1 cent worth.
PG: Garrett??? I don't know... I haven't seen anybody play... hopefully I can get to some cap city games just to get a sneak peek at some skill level (not that I know how to judge it anyway)
SG: Taylor - I'm gonna go out on a limb and select our high scorer from last year but for all I know he'll miss the first few games again this year though.
SF: Clark - I think he's going to be working on whatever coach suggested to him this summer to end his senior season with a bang, thus holding onto a starting role!
SF/PF: WJ - I don't see any sort of sophmore slump out of this. It's not like he was benefitting from everyone else getting all the attention last year and was able to pad his stats from being unguarded... so the things he did last year were done with teams focusing on him (while he was a freshmen) so I only see his game getting better with more experience and maybe a little more size.
PF/C: Jiri - To start with Brackins maybe winning over the starting position later... either way... both will get plenty of playing time. I stand strong to the fact that big guys make the hardest transition to D1 basketball... so it will take a little bit for Craig to get into a rhythm.
As shown with Wesley Johnson last year. McD isn't going to play the best player at each position... he's going to play the best players. With the leaping ability of Clark, Johnson and Taylor... (maybe Brackins... haven't seen it yet) I don't think we HAVE to have a center on the floor. We have guys that can still match up well enough defensively... and create a mismatch in agility offensively against opponents.
Clark starts every game unless injured.
I've got to agree with Bronco. I definately see Clark and Johnson starting at the 3 and 4 with Jiri at the 5. This is all assuming one of the guards comes in and can start at PG. Clark doesn't have the handle to play much SG and Johnson doesn't have the defense (yet). WJ got beat off the dribble way to much last year and he'll have to fix that problem with his game in order to play much SG. At least at the start Clark will be the 3, WJ the 4 and Jiri the 5. Brackins may crack that lineup, but hopefully he won't have to. Ideally he'll get to come of the bench as a freshman and be a threat inside. It may actually help his progress to go against 2nd stringers. We really need Garrett or Brister to come in right away and play a decent PG. Taylor could do it like he did last season, but we would be much better off with him as SG.
To start out the season I am this as the starting lineup...
PG - Brister
SG - Taylot
SF - W. Johnson
PF - Brackins
C - Jiri
With Clark, Garrett and Thompson playing a lot of minutes off the bench. I personally think Clark would be much better off the bench. If he could come in and give us 5 minute spurts of solid energy that would really pick up the team.
Of course things will change as the season goes on and our freshman get more experience and toughness.
Hey this is just one man's opinions, but if you don't like them, then I say we meet at the Campanile and settle this like they do in the Dominican Republic....goat jousting.
The guy was just hanging brain. I mean, what’s all the fuss? If that’s flashing then lock me up.
Any one expecting Cory to transfer after this year?
So, with all this depth, what's the speculation on incoming players red-shirting this year?
FWIW, I don't know how this whole lineup thing will shake out but I would be shocked if Brackins is not a starter.
Too early to call who starts. I trust Greg will put the best 5 out there and we should have some decent depth too. Most of it will probably be who comes in and shows the most right away in practice.
I wouldn't rule out Thompson and Jiri starting with Brackins coming off the bench to start the season. Brackins will have to beat out 2 expirienced guys to crack the rotation and really whoever is playing the best is going to finish games anyways. Ross started several games but he usually only got 10-15 minutes most nights he did so starting is not everything...
