Iowa State President Gregory Geoffroy has requested that the ISU Athletics Council review a proposal to provide the Cyclone football team access to a chaplain, according to a statement released by the university this afternoon.
The statement goes on to say that Geoffroy forwarded a petition, which raised concerns about the proposal, to the Council. Geoffroy received the petition last week, which included about 100 signatures.
The Council has been charged with drafting in consultation with athletic director Jamie Pollard – for the president’s consideration by Aug. 1.
Chizik, hired last November, wants to hire a chaplain who would be paid by private donations. Pollard supports the plan because he contends student-athletes are under a lot of pressure and need access to spiritual guidance.
Faculty members behind the petition said hiring a chaplain is improper at a public university given the separation between church and state. And they said the move would favor Christianity over other religions.
The Athletics Council is an 18-member group that advises the president on
matters related to intercollegiate athletics. LINK -
Re: Geoffroy turns chaplain proposal over to advisory council
It seems as though I missed a key point while posting in the other thread about this. If this is to be paid for by private donations, how in the world would this be a violation of the first amendment? I've read and reread my copy of the constitution, and I can't find the terms "separation of church and state" anywhere. -

Along with the atheism petition, Geoffroy should forward a copy of Deace's article!

"Geoffroy received the petition last week, which included about 100 signatures."
100 signatures!?! LOL. Boy, there really is an outcry against the team Chaplain!!!
I would love to see how many signatures a petition in favor of the Chaplain would get. I'll bet I could go to the mall or downtown Ames and get over 100 signatures in favor of it in just a few hours...unfortunately, I live thousands of miles away!

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes. -

The signatures on the petition were those of ISU staff not just any joe on the street. I believe that is why the 100+ carries more weight.

Without getting into a huge, enormous discussion and debate, the term "separation of church and state" isn't in the constitution. It is an interpretation of the first amendment. The term itself was first used by Thomas Jefferson in a letter dated 1802. From there, the letter was cited by others and became an accepted interpretation of the first amendment's text "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . . ." . Eventually, the term was used by the supreme court in rulings thereby setting precendent.

All I was doing was explaining why 100 signatures was significant. I was not debating for one side or the other on this controversy, nor do I care to.
