Direct Quotes from JP and Brett Meyer about the Chaplian.

From the CR Gazette today...Meyer "nailed" it...he is correct.

An Ames pastor formerly traveled with the football team and attended many of its home games. Iowa State quarterback Bret Meyer, who attends Wednesday night Bible study, is all for a chaplain.

‘‘To me, if it’s not going to involve you — the professor making the petition — just mind your own business,’’ Meyer said. ‘‘We’re not hurting you, we’re not bothering you, (so) just leave us alone. It’s unfortunate that they’re trying to make a big deal out of it.

‘‘It’s going to be privately funded; nobody’s going to lose any money, the taxpayers.’’

Meyer is dead on. If it is not hurting you, than just shut your mouth. People like to complain about anything these days. Especially if it gets their name in the paper.

You mean people are trying to stick their nose in something that does not belong to them. These guys should just be dismissed (not fired, just forgotten). They are just trying to get their 15 min of fame and get their names all over the news.

I think dissent is good. Give them enough rope to embarrass themselves.

To be fair though, if there are any players opposed to this do you think they would publicly speak out against what their new coach is trying to do?

To be fair would they if they didn't like his style of offense/defense/etc if they wanted to play. Don't position this as a way to quash their "right to free speech" as it is no different than my example.

What does playing style have to do with anything? If they signed on to a Christian school such as Baylor, then they might not have a right to dissent. However, you don't have an inalienable right to play your favorite style of football.

It is stated that Meyer has a bible study, probably led by a pastor. Why couldn't that person be his chaplain. Then, a Jewish player could pick a Rabbi for his chaplain, etc... There is no lack of religious mentors here in Ames. We don't need to pay one to come from the south.

This would be done like a family--private. If someone doesn't like it or the Christian values the coaches have, he won't sign up to play for ISU in the first place and if he has attitude problems to air laundry publically first that won't be a good team player anyway. That is if the media's first question is how do they feel about the chaplain and having Christianity forced upon them. That media person would have to find a different beat I think. I have yet to see a secular councelor that can live his own life on a high plane let alone councel someone with difficulties.

My point was that these kids aren't going to speak out period-particularly against a new coach.

I'd be all for it too. Brett Meyer is one of my favorite players ISU has ever had. I hope he explodes this year under Chizik and gets drafted earlier in the draft.
