My parents liked to stay at the Heartland Inn. Very clean, nice, and inexpensive.
The one and only time I ever made a reservation at the Heartland Inn in Ames was a debacle. I arrived around 10PM and the place was crawling with railroad laborers; girl at the front desk said they had a contract with the railroad for lodging. She gives me a card-key; I open the door, flick on the lights and some guy sits straight up in bed. I apologize, back out and go back to the front desk. She gives me a second card key and I don't even need to go in this room to know that it's occupied (pulsing LaBamba beat was a dead give-away). I said enough's enough and moved across the street to the AmericInn, never to return.
It's unfortunate that there aren't enough hotel rooms in Ames; there're a couple under construction but that won't do you any good this week...

Thanks for all the help. Actually I found a place to stay; with an old friend who lives in Ankeny. Next time, hopefully, I will know my way around Ames a little better. I assume that the hotels fill up in Ames on football game days?
Not totally related, but I have to complain. The hotel rates in Ames are so up and down it is unreal. You can get a room for $45 that another day will be $80 or so. I just hate that fluxuation. I understand it, but I just hate it.
