Drake's Coach Ash on the way out?

Drake coach Rob Ash is interviewing at Montana State for its head football coaching vacancy today, said Bobcats' athletic director Peter Fields.

Ash is one of four finalists on a list that includes Carroll College coach Mike Van Diest, North Dakota coach Dale Lennon and Duke assistant Larry Kerr.

Montana State will conclude its interviews Thursday.

"After they've interviewed I will sit down with my president and vice president and we'll gather all the information on the four candidates and then make a decision," Fields said. "Friday we'll spend sifting through everything and talking about things and discussion, then we'll make a decision from there."

Montana State is searching for a replacement for Mike Kramer, who was fired last month after the arrest of a fifth current or former player in less than a year.

Ash led the Bulldogs to a 9-2 record last year, the third-best record in school history. He owns four Pioneer Football League championships and is the winningest coach in Bulldog history with a 125-63-2 mark.

"Coach Ash is a phenomenal coach and a wonderful human being and somebody that would be difficult for Drake to replace if we were to lose him," Drake athletic director Sandy Hatfield Clubb said today. "At the same time, I know he's a man that can caoch at any level, and he certainly has given his all to Drake and made Drake a better place, including the young men he's coached over the years."

Ash is a three-time league coach of the year.

Wow, that would be a step up for Coach Ash, but isn't kinda late for schools to be looking for coaches?
