Recap of Paul Shirley on KXNO (Cotlar)
Paul was in studio for a couple of segments on Larry Cotlar's show this morning. Here is a quick recap:
Talked about the book and how it came about. Nothing too exciting.
Said Eustachy was literally a scream machine. He thought that might have contributed to the vast amount of players leaving. He was asked if he liked playing for LE and he said he liked the winning and that's about it. Practices were very painful.
He said that he loved the fans and people in Ames but he didn't exactly have a glamorous college life between getting his engineering degree and basketball. Mentioned the fans being great several times.
The "Hard to recruit to Ames" comment discussed. He said people were making a big deal out of it when the fact still stands that its harder to recruit to Ames than say Tempe, AZ or Austin, TX. He said again that he loves the people in Ames and in Iowa, its just the "arctic circle".
They talked a lot more about his basketball experiences but nothing earth shattering.
I really enjoyed the interview...even with Cotlar trying his best to again make another interview un-listenable. (Side rant: Does Cotlar even listen to his guests?? Paul said he had been writing his entire professional career. The very next question Larry asks "So...have you been writing before 2 years ago when you signed the book deal?")
The interview ends by the guys missing a hard break and gets cut off when Paul is outlining what's ahead for him.
It's sad when we have 1 option for sportsradio because they can get away with that chop-job. -

Anybody know what segment he is going to be on Rome? I need to know when to go to lunch...

Re: Recap of Paul Shirley on KXNO (Cotlar)
Who will Paul play for next or will he be going into coaching or broadcasting so he can write another book?
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -

He said he'd probably go play oversees again for a year to establish a bankroll before returning to the US.
Paul also mentioned that his brother is a pretty good ball player and is going out to USC for Tim Floyd's camp this summer.

A good option on sports radio is 810 AM WHB out of KC if you are close enough to pick it up. You can also get it streaming on the internet. It's a real good option if you are a Chiefs @/or a Royals fan.

Saw Paul and one of his brothers out again this weekend in KC he just sticks out like a soar thumb. I would like to see him go into broadcasting I don't know how he would be in front of a camera but anything is better then Bill Walton.

Uh oh, he called Ames the "arctic circle." I hope he gets out of town before the lynch mob finds him...

Re: Recap of Paul Shirley on KXNO (Cotlar)
Honestly Cotlar is probably one of the better local options on KXNO. He gets some good guests and is pretty fair with his coverage. I don't get a chance to listen to Jon Miller much but he's not as excitable and it's obviously weighted more towards Hawk talk. Then come Marty and Miller who can be all over the place and the ever so excitable Marty Tirrell. Why I keep listening to them I don't know, maybe it's because I'm waiting to hear what stupid thing Marty is going to get worked up over next? If they combined Ken Miller and Jon Miller (call it Miller Time!) and found another show for the 2-4 time slot it would make for some better listening.
Anyways we've had enough rants on KXNO already I probably just started yet another long discussion inadvertantly...

But previously, he called Ames "a brutal, brutal place". At the time, it wasn't clear that he was only talking about the weather. I'm still not sure he was. I took it to mean it was a terrible place to live. Calling Brutal makes it sound like the yard at the State Pen.

For me, Cotlar & Kahn are B-R-U-T-A-L to listen to. The only reason I listen (if I don't have a CD in) is because I don't like the "morning shows" the music stations put on. But he does get good guests, I'll give him that. And he is fair with his coverage.

He did mention that it was tough to make friends being so busy with school and basketball. He also had something like 45 different teammates in his 5 years, making it tough to even bond with his own players.
