Re: Anybody else see this lame prediction?

Reading that blog reminded me just how good the Big 12 could potentially be next season. I expect a top 8 finish, but there is tons of competition in the middle. I happen to think we will finish better than Nebraska, Colorado, Texas Tech, Ok State, and Baylor. I'm not buying into Baylor quite yet, even though the pieces are all in place for success in Waco. Maybe I'm drinking the koolaid, but 10 of the 12 teams in conference look good to me. I think Colorado still sucks next season and Nebraska has too many newbies to be real competitive. Gonna be lots of good games next winter.

People have said "It's Baylor's year, they have some talent in place" for the past couple years and it hasn't happened. Drew has brought some good talent to Waco but I'm not convinced he is a great gameday coach.

Dumbest and most telling quote by this blogger...

When telling why he thought Nebraska had a better team than ISU, even though the Clones beat them both times they played last year...

"You can't just go by head-to-head meetings."

Uh... "maybe" you can say that with one game, but 2 (including one on their home court)???? Nuff said.

He should run the NCAA Tournament with that philosophy. "Well Hampton, you beat Iowa State fair and square...but head-to-head meetings aren't the only measure in this tournament. You guys shouldn't have won so we are going to let Iowa State go to the 2nd round. But thanks for playing."

Am I the only one that likes the fact we are picked last? I think we really have an opportunity to surprise lots of teams this year, and if the newbies gel, we could really surprise. Having said that, we are putting a lot of faith in newcomers playing a lot of minutes and performing well, especially at PG. To me, that bodes for erratic play where we lose some we feel we should win, and win some we probably should have lost on paper. I am cautiously optimisitic. Why? A) We will have more talent and depth (i.e. AT & CB) in the front line. B) We should have more options for shooters with range (i.e. LS & Haluska). C) While we lose experience at the PG, we have more options with the new guys who will hopefully be bigger offensive threats to pair with MT.

You do know that this will only be his 4th year, and he lost 1/2 of one.

He took over in the worst circumstances imaginable, probation, the murder of one player at the hands of another, and he has put together a pretty solid foundation of talent. Underestimate them if you want, but I don't think that the rest of the conference holds your views.

I see us finishing somewhere between 4-7 this year. I think it really takes a new coach 3 years to have a noticable impact on anything. We have a great freshman class coming in I think but I think you'll see an immedate impact from only two of them this year. Who that is I'm not sure yet. Realisticly when was the last time you saw a team impacted by more than 1 or 2 of there freshman. I'm not basketball expert but the last time I remember that happening was with Michigan and the Fab 5 15 years ago (****** am I really getting that old?). Starting next year we should be beating KU and Texas at least once each and competing for a conference title.

While I like the idea of being picked to finish last, I just don't see the rest of the league buying that prediction either. It's one thing for all media outlets to pick us last (in football), it's quite another thing for a Mizzou homer from the backwaters of the state to act like a complete dolt and pick a much improved team to finish last. Yeah, we lost some pieces - that's called dead weight. We're gonna be a much smoother operation for it this coming season.

Why the hell would you want to be picked last. I would rather be picked first i dont really care about expectations. I dont think we will finish last or first but i would rather get respect from others around the Big 12. I dont see North Carolina, Duke, Texas, Kansas, and Florida complaining about the high expectations of finishing 1st and 2nd in their league every year. Where i as an ISU fan want to be is a program that is expected to win the conference every year. That how you end up with bluechip recruits. Its tough to recruit having the moto "You should come here because we have little expectations so anything you do will be great." I am an ISU fan and in basketball I expect to WIN.

I like the expectations to win. Just seemed like an extra chip on the shoulder for this year. If this team felt like they should finish last, and if we as their fans felt that way, then I would be truly dissappointed.

    1. Chip on the shoulder - nothing is more motivating then going out every nite looking at the newspaper article on the bulletin board giving you the intent of proving the world wrong.

    2. I have an underdog complex - I like it when people are expected to fail and then go and rub the success in the haters' faces.

    3. When you're picked to finish last, you're bound to catch someone off guard. Let's say we're playing Texas, and they play Kansas the game after us. I'm not going to complain about them looking ahead to the Kansas game and us reaping the benefits of that because they became unfocused by a newspaper article expecting us to be the worst team in the league.
