'Twas The Night Before Kickoff 2010
'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE KICKOFF'
'Twas the night before kickoff, in two-thousand and ten,
And the Cyclones and Hawks would do battle again.
The ‘experts’ were crowing, “There isn‘t a chance,
For the Cyclones to do the Cy-Hawk victory dance“.
The Hawkeyes were confident, and ranked very high,
And their fans saw the limit as only the sky.
But the Cardinal and Gold were a much improved bunch,
They show up to work with their hard hats and lunch.
The players were tucked away snug in their beds,
As the next day‘s game plans danced in their heads.
The Hawks had just feasted on ribs by the slab,
But Clayborn was late, he couldn‘t get a cab.
As game day arrived all the tailgaters kicked in,
Hollering loudly, “Let the party begin!”
There was lemonade, iced tea and all different pops,
Hey, you didn‘t dare drink, there were too many cops.
Then the stadium filled, the one named after Nile,
The big game would begin in just a short while,
The rain, it had ended and the sun filled the sky,
As the mascots went at it, ol‘ Herky and Cy.
Both the teams hit the field, the Hawks in their swarm,
As Coach Herman got ready to outsmart old Norm.
Paul Rhoads led the Cyclones out on the field,
And their swagger said, “Iowa, we will not yield“.
"Now Arnaud, Now Franklin, Now A.J and Knott!
Let‘s give the Hawkeyes all that we got!
On Money, On Sed, On L.J. and Hicks,
Let‘s go toe-to-toe, and let‘s beat those ******!"
"To the flip of the quarter,
To the kick of the ball!
Now dash away! Dash away!
Dash away all!"
The Cyclones called tails, and the coin flip agreed,
And the Hawkeyes would be the team using the tee.
It was Leonard who grabbed the opening kick,
With a return to the forty, he looked pretty slick.
The offense was clicking, just dunking and dinking,
And slowly the Hawk defense‘s heart began sinking.
This was not the new offense they had faced just last year,
No, this one was moving in a whole different gear.
Eleven plays later the Clones scored a TD,
15 fruitless quarters the streak would not be.
That first score was huge, to quiet the crowd,
But the Hawks would soon return them to loud.
Their first offensive series proved to be just as pretty,
as they scored and gave energy back to Iowa City.
It was 7 to 7 at the end of the first,
And now the ‘Big Game’ was fully immersed.
The second was quiet, as the defenses got tight,
Both kickers missed field goals, they were off to the right.
But just before halftime, the Cyclones would strike,
23 yards to Franklin, touchdown! , we like!
It was Cyclones by 7 as they went to the break,
And the Hawkeyes were starting to look like a fake.
When the third quarter began, the Hawks had the pig,
And they came out as sloppy as a three dollar wig.
It was Stanzi to Simms…that’s right, he’s a Clone,
but the Hawkeyes would hold ground inside the red zone.
The Cyclones would settle for an 18 yard kick
And Mahoney would boot it between the sticks.
It was 17-7 midway through the fourth,
As the Cyclones defended the goal to the North.
The Iowa offense would find it a groove,
And a touchdown by Hampton showed he could still move.
Now the lead is just three, and State has the ball,
But the game-winning drive would frustratingly stall.
A punt, then a play, and a TD…we thought,
But for pass interference, McNutt just got caught.
So a moderate field goal was the next play they would try,
If Mossbrucker would make it, the game would be tied.
He lined up from 40 and stared at the post,
And drilled it to give a big boost to the hosts.
OVERTIME! That’s what the announcers proclaimed,
Iowa State won the flip, and their defense was named.
The first play was a pass, Ricky to D.J.K.,
But Dutch got penetration, got a paw in the way.
The pass was a duck because it was tipped,
And Simms jumped in and put the ball on his hip,
In a play reminiscent of Lamarcus Hicks,
The Clones win dramatically, on a freakin’ pick six!
The Cyclone fans screamed, the Hawk fans were hushed,
Their delusional dream of a championship crushed.
It was the most amazing ending this series has seen,
Iowa State 23, Iowa 17
It’s a beautiful thing to beat the black and the gold,
It’s one of those things that will never grow old.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s just one of 12 games,
But the Cy-Hawk Trophy……it’s back home, in Ames.

And old GC was there, 12-pack in tow,
And he smiled widely, as the Hawkeyes ate crow.
He stumbled into the distance, as the sun set on the day.
“**** Iowa City, you’re all so ******* gay.”
Re: 'Twas The Night Before Kickoff 2010
That. Was. Awesome.
Nice job.

Haha, at first I read this as "And old Gene Chizik was there..." I was wondering what the hell you meant by that.
