As much as you don't want to hear it, but the saying is true by looking at the rankings (which are facts) "Iowa has nothing to gain and everything to lose". Try to show me otherwise. As edr247 said, If you think waxing a MAC school last Saturday would of yielded different poll results, then there is no reason to further discuss this with you.
If Iowa continues to beat ISU in this manner (recent history would tell you otherwise) then yes, Iowa gains nothing from it. What happens though if ISU becomes a regular bowl team?
The "gain nothing, everything to lose" argument can be made against ANY non-conference team. EVERY single one...

When the conference goes to 9 games that will mean that Iowa will only play 1 BCS team every year (most likely anyway). As a fan, I'd rather it not be the same team every year. But it brings in a lot of money for both schools and even if both teams stink people would still care about the game.
If I were in charge I think I'd stop playing the game every year and play it every other year which gives both schools a little schedule flexibility while maintaining the rivalry. The bolded part is why the series won't end, unless somehow both schools (IE, the State of Iowa) can generate more $$$ because of it.
It is the biggest event in the state outside of the State Fair. There is more to it than just ticket sales.
I could see it ending perhaps if one of the two teams could get a primetime national game each year in place of it, but in terms of overall $$$ generated by it, I don't think much else could cause it.

The "gain nothing, everything to lose" argument can be made against ANY non-conference team. EVERY single one... When people make that argument, they rarely deny that play a MAC team doesn't benefit them anymore than beating ISU does, nor do they deny that they stand to lose just as much in the case of a loss. BUT, the point they try to make is that those MAC teams have a significantly lower chance of beating us than ISU does. In playing ISU, the risk of losing (and the consequences that go with that loss) increases, while the benefit of a victory stays the same.

You are saying a win vs. a BCS Big 12 school is no better than a win vs a MAC team...
2. You say losing to ISU is worse than a loss to a MAC team.
3. You say that MAC teams have a less chance of beating Iowa.
1 and 2 does not make logical sense, especially when you add #3 in the mix...

At this point in time, the first point isn't that far off. Beating up on ISU probably does little more, if anything at all, for Iowa's national street cred.
But if MAC teams have less chance of beating Iowa, then a loss to a MAC team has to, by default, be worse than a loss to a team that Iowa already has a greater chance of defeat against.

When its said like that, I reluctantly agree. A BCS team win will get you more cred than a MAC team, but as everyone knows, ISU gets extremely low street cred for a BCS team, whether that is deserved or not is another topic.
I still challenge the 2nd point though. IF Iowa were to lose to a MAC team, it would be FAR more damaging than losing to ISU. Anyone denying that is delusional, plain and simple. If you go back in time a scant 10 years, that provides all the evidence you should need.
As far as this discussion goes though, the pendulum will swing. Iowa will not always be as good as they are (or appear to) and Iowa State will not be as bad as they are (or appear to).

I didn't say that a loss to ISU was worse than a loss to a MAC school. But in the eyes of the voters, there's not really a whole lot of difference at this point. A lot of these voters are pretty ignorant, and don't bother to actually take a close look at many teams. If they did, they would know that ISU is a solid team. But they don't, and just assume that you guys suck. They don't really hold ISU in higher esteem than good MAC team.

Is it possible that the national media thinks less of the clones than Hawk fans do?
