Harlan H.S. Kicker

Was at the Carroll/Harlan game last night and had a chance to watch Harlan's kicker, Trent Wendt warm up. He has a HUGE leg! Did some great punting, plus kickoffs and field goals. At one point, he was easily knocking through 45 yd. field goals (plus hit a 47 yarder during the game).

Hopefully, CPR's staff is looking at him. Would be a great replacement for Mahoney in a couple of years.

(From the DMR: Harlan kicker Trent Wendt has booted 141 extra points in his career. That's sixth on the all-time list. The record is 170.)

Take all HS kicking stats with a grain of salt. They get a 10-yard advantage on kickoffs, get to use a tee on field goals, and have 5 extra feet of width between the uprights.

A lot of kicking recruiting is done through camps. I know they have their eyes on picking up a kicker this off season so they dont have to put in a true freshman after next season.

So him being able to kick a 45 yard consistently must mean he sucks. Dont look at him at all. Cause god knows coaches don't recruit from what kids can show in high school. Give me a break!!

Agree that they get a little advantage - but they are still in HS. Big things to look at would be technique, accuracy, and of course leg strength. Two other kids that are being looked at by a handful of schools are Cole Netten (jr) of Ankeny and Mac Chapman (sr) of Dowling. Netten comes from a great line of kickers, drives KO through the endzone, and has hit from 55+. Chapman has a stonger leg, yet is a little more raw than Netten. FG attempts over 50 yds sail through with plenty of distance.

Ty Littzen from Fort Dodge is the real deal. I saw him play against Urbandale and he was putting kick offs through the end zone. I see he is ranked #13 nationally on Kohl's kick off rankings and 11th on FGs.

All that he was saying was he had a huge leg and could kick field goals. Why do you have to be so negative and say that high school kickers get a tee and they get a 10 yd advantage. All he said was he hopes he gets looked at by the staff.

every high school kicker gets that advantage.... ? ... Also, every great player in HS is only playing against HS level players... so how are they supposed to evaluate them?

I'd say, if a guy is a great kicker, he's a great kicker. a 47 yarder is a 47 yarder even with a tee, thats a damn good kick.

Thanks for pointing out Kohl's rankings. Looks like a couple of other Iowans ranked as 5 stars: Marshall Koehn of Solon (#18 overall) and Michael Schmadeke of Waterloo Columbus (#23 overall). Of course, both are smack dab in the middle of Hawkeye country.:skeptical:

Maybe Wendt isn't the guy, but would be wise to pursue a kicker in the upcoming recruiting class.

And...? While high school kickers are allowed to use a two inch block, college kickers are allowed to use a one inch block.

My wife was walking the dog next to the Ames High JV game and said the Ames JV kicker was hit a 35 yarder. This begs the question Why did our Kickers suck for so many years? I think we found quite a punter in Kerby.

No, they arent.

Edit: Nevermind, I checked the NCAA Rule book and it says the ball can't be elevated more than 1 inch off the gound...with that being said, has anyone seen a kicker using the 1 inch tee?

ARTICLE 4.
a. A field goal place kick is a kick by a player of the team in possession while the ball is controlled on the ground by a teammate.
b. A free kick place kick is a kick by a player of the team in possession while the ball is positioned on a tee or the ground. It may be controlled by a teammate. The ball may be positioned on the ground and contacting the tee.
c. A tee is a device that elevates the ball for kicking purposes. It may not elevate the ball’s lowest point more than one inch above the ground (A.R. 2-15-4-I).

Harlan always has a good kicker... Billy Cundiff went to drake and should have been at Iowa or ISU... Current kicker does have a great leg. Tailback is a beast as well.
