Traffic leaving the game
Can someone tell me what the heck is the point of not letting people turn left off of Beach when leaving the game?? Every year before this year it was never a problem. I want to get on Hwy 30 and go home...not drive out past Mortensen!

1. to have less traffic from mortenson that they have to stop the southern flow of traffic from the stadium on University Blvd.
2. Beach is just one lane to turn from there (though it would make a lot of sense to add a long right turn lane there). It can take forever for a car to be able to cross traffic and turn left from there, so you end up with a giant line, when if everyone turns right, even going all the way out to south dakota, its still probably faster.

Re: Traffic leaving the game
I'd go home the back way but that is closed off last I knew. The other option is HWY 30 West and then through Madrid back to 141.
I turned rgt on Beach and did a U turn to come back the other way...lots doing that...gonna end up causing an accident because everyone wants to turn left off Beach and they won't let them and not everyone is familiar with the back roads back to DSM.

Every other game I have left south on beach to mortenson and turned left. Never been an issue before last night.

If you're talking the back way down 17, i havent taken that yet this year, but i heard that was opened, at least as of a couple weeks ago.

You're probably right since he mentioned the other way was going through madrid, my bad. (it was also closed this summer... getting to ames was kind of a pain in the ***)

Re: Traffic leaving the game
Yeah its open. I had to go to the Ice rink after the game and had to go out to duff get on 30 go back to the Dakota exit just to get back there. That may be the least direct route I have ever taken.

Maybe they just had to adjust traffic because people actually stayed for almost the entire game Green hills for thy throne, and for crown a golden melody/Ringing in the hearts of all who bring thee love and loyalty/Dear Alma Mater, make our spirits great True and valiant like the bells of I-O-WA STATE!
And thank you Stumpy for this: -

I expressed my "frustration" of this to the policeman waving us off and he said that there have been "too many accidents when they let people turn left". I did not mention to him that this explaination was pure BS because I have been using that route for 5 years and have NEVER seen an accident there after a game. Re: Traffic leaving the game
Yesterday wasn't bad I live in Ames, but after the UNI game I don't know if people had just taken their stupid pills or what, everyone wanted to turn into me coming accross from by the tail gate tents from C lot to B lot.

One car in front of me turned left anyway around the cop and he was PO'd!
They need to fix this because the back way is all farted up as mentioned.

Re: Traffic leaving the game
I gotta agree with the change, honestly. its not that far out of the way to go to south dakota and swing back east on 30 (if thats the way you want to go), and it keeps traffic from beach flowing onto mortenson moving more smoothly. In my experience usually you have quite a few more wanting to turn right than left, and they get backed up by the 1 guy that has to wait forever to be able to turn left onto mortenson. A right turn lane might help here, but with the current setup, i believe its the right move.

Re: Traffic leaving the game
Anybody know what happened on S16th after the game? It looked like someone may have been hit by a car.

Re: Traffic leaving the game
Just seems that they are trying to use two entrances onto 30 (University and Dakota) rather than sending everyone to the University entrance ramp. Should speed things up and create less congestion exiting the pay lots East of the stadium.
