Question about Instant Replay during the game

I don't understand when we challenge a call. They won't give the fans a replay to see what our thoughts are? Anyone know if this is an NCAA rule or is it at Jack Trice Stadium Seems like every game I watch they replay it and you hear the fans boooo. Not sure what is up with this.

I think it happens at Kinnick too. I think it probably happens in most stadiums, as they don't want the crowd affecting the refs? But I do agree that sometimes while they're reviewing the call, you can hear the crowd booing.

Sometimes the replay will be shown on the screen, before the play is reviewed, and can be a stimulus to get the play reviewed in the first place. And sometimes they'll show the play after the review, depending on whether the play went for or against the home team.

In the NFL:

During a play challenge, NFL rules say only the broadcasting network feed of the play can be used as a replay on the videoboards. Then, all in-stadium replays of the big play must end once the referee makes the call.

But that's the NFL. Not sure if there are rules within the NCAA.

In the NCAA as far as the NFL rule goes, IF there is a TV crew only that video may be used for the replay. If there is no TV crew the in-house displays are used. Part of the problem with this, is what is being shown on the screen in the stadium cannot be used by the officials if there is a TV crew. Since the angles are different the crowd wont be able to see the same thing the refs are seeing.

I wrote a paper about this back in high school. Back in the olden days (2006ish) teams would often use instant replay as a sort of homefield advantage. The guys upstairs would watch it and if the play seemed favorable for the hometeam (as in the hometeam should throw a challenge flag), they would show it on the big screen. If it were favorable for the visitors (as in they should throw a challenge flag or were even considering it) the same video board operators would not show a replay. It is more in depth than that but I tried to simplify it, and in doing so probably over simplified it.

Side point: There are no challenges in college football. All replays are initiated in the booth.

Actually, there ARE challenges:

b. The head coach of either team may request that the game be stopped and
a play be reviewed by challenging the on-field ruling.
1. A head coach initiates this challenge by taking a team timeout
before the ball is next legally put in play (Exception: Rule 12-3-5-c)
and informing the referee that he is challenging the ruling of the
previous play. If a head coach’s challenge is successful, he retains the

More or less. In-house video operators are basically instructed to not show any replay that may be controversial, nor one that is under further review.

I was always under the impression it was because the stadium cameras might capture a different view than the actual broadcast cameras and influence the decision.
