Well, when he got to ISU the program was an absolute mess, and it took several years to get it back on track. In addition, ISU paid for Mac to learn how to be a head coach in the first 6 years of his contract. There is no doubt that he was a much better HC when he left ISU then he was when he got there.
The big issue is money. MN is not likely to offer much more money than Mac is currently making as an asst. for the Gators. It is unlikely he would go back to the Big 10 just because he misses beating Iowa. The Minnesota job will pay four times what McCarney is making as an asst coach. I believe he is around $250,000, the MN job will play close to 2 mill if not more for the right coach.

A head coach at any FBS school will make more than a position coach at an elite school. I would not say Mac takes marginal schools and makes them better. I would, however, say that he takes bad programs and makes them marginal. Which is what Minnesota needs right now. I love Mac and appreciate everything he did for this program, but he will never consistently win 8-10 games a season. You couple his playcalling style with his semmed complete respect for every coach he plays against and lack of motivation to step on a team's throat and put them away and you'll get a coach that is going to lose more games that he should win than win more games he should lose.

Re: Dienhart: McCarney to Minnesota?
I haven't read the complete thread, but I do hope Mac gets a head coaching job again - and if Minnesota is it, then fine. I have nothing but good things to say about Mac.
For some reason the program was spiralling downward and it seemed like he couldn't pull on the stick hard enough to bring it back up. Whether he should have been given another year to fix things, or the concept of ISU being better or worse with Mac still at the helm has been discussed over and over on this board.
That's the past, however. My main point is that Mac is a good guy and it's hard not to root for him and wish him success.

He's managed to recruit a couple guys from us to Minn in this class. How you could chose Minn over us right now is beyond me.
