Bowling in the South, (Thread # 157 or so)
Yeah, I know, this has been discussed to ad nauseum, but given Mr. Pollard's pronouncement on last night's call in show that it ain't happening because he can't sell it to the BOR given current attendance numbers, bear with me while I give this tired out subject one more stab. Then we can officially declare it to be a dead horse.
I have a question: Why does the placing of stands in the south end of the stadium have to be some fancy granite and brick high tech structure costing mega millions of dollars? Why does it need to include fancy dressing rooms, athletic offices or any other glitzy amenities to be built? Why can't it just be rows of seats.
Now I freely admit that I am not a building engineer. In fact, I'm no engineer at all. But it seems to me that an acceptable area of seating that expands from each end of the existing permanent structure can be built. Such a structure would be built much like the existing bleachers, but cover a greater area including the grassy areas. I have no clue as to what the cost would be, but I would guess it would be a fraction of the $60M + I've heard mentioned by others.
Now, it is with great trepidation that I mention...................wait for it .................
while I flinch and brace myself against the barbs and insults to be thrown my way.....
Kinnick Stadium utilized such a structure on a very large scale in its south stadium for decades and it served well. That changed once they raised $90m in mega buck to remodel, but the old structure served the purpose. And I dare say that other schools use such structures as I type.
So would someone please enlighten me, with as little cursing and belittling as possible, as to why this adding of seats in the south has to be such a big freaking deal, for now anyway.
Thanks.

Thanks. Most of the cost is probably in preparing the footings and building the structure. Remember that whatever is built has to be able to support the forces exerted by thousands of jumping screaming fans. I'm guessing that adding in the offices is probably just a fraction of what the cost of just building the support structure is.

Is there a reason we can't fill the south end with dirt and then build seats on that? Isn't that how they built JTS anyway? Not sure if its a better option but it seems less expensive.

Someone have Chris ask Ben Bruns next time they talk. Wasn't Ben the project engineer the past couple years on the rennovations of the bathrooms and concession??

Do we need a second deck either. Why not just have one deck that is freaking huge? Just to make the stadium look bigger.
