Just some random highschool love for harlan...
they were beating the undefeated #2 seed in 4a, AL, into the 4th quarter this year, before losing it down the stretch....
they can hang with any team in the state... very impressive.
ps i tried putting this on iowapreps board but it would not let me for some reason.

And the loss to AL was actually an upset. Harlan is the premier athletic department in the entire state. It's amazing a school that size can be so competitive in basically every sport, you see it in the smaller classes but theres generally more parity in 3A/4A.
The only bigger turnoff than finding out a woman smokes, is finding out she's a Husker fan. -
Re: Just some random highschool love for harlan...
Okay, quick question for some of you guys who may be a little more familiar with it, but it seems to me for all of their success (looking at strictly football for now) that they really haven't put out much for Division 1 talent. I swear it seems like we have like half a dozen Valley kids on our roster alone just this year, but it never seems like there are any prospects ever getting talked up out of Harlan. Is it that they just don't produce the individual talent, or is it that I just don't hear about them since they are way out in western Iowa?

Harlan is good at football this year? Wow, they came out of nowhere.

Class 3A is going to be really fun to watch in the postseason with Harlan, Heelan, Solon and Clear Lake among the teams going for a state title

I think they could have a few more, if some of the kids actively pursued walking on... but they have had two recent big ones, the Hoch brothers, both at missou. But yes oustide that, not much. I think their tailback this year could walk on somewhere and play, but who knows if he will.
Just outstanding knowledge of how to play football, perperation, and the best coaching around. Most every kid there also wants to play, and be great.

They have more championships than Heelan in the last five years?

Re: Just some random highschool love for harlan...
Part of their long term success has to be the coaching staff, but I think another is that their kids just expect to win. Their parents did, their older brothers did, and probably their children will. And I think other teams are intimidated by that tradition as well.

ps i tried putting this on iowapreps board but it would not let me for some reason. We will find out how good AL is on Friday. I believe they will get embarrassed by Ankeny. If they win or even keep it close then they are for real, if not they are pretenders.

Re: Just some random highschool love for harlan...
i remember something like.. harlan won 3 state football in a row (2000-2001-2002) then lost to Bret Meyer and Atlantic then won 3 more in a row. Or something a long those lines.
Thats awesome.
I watched Harlan play Carroll in the Dome last year. they were very impressive. Props to coach Bladt, he's got the best program in the state bar none.

Re: Just some random highschool love for harlan...
All of my cousins played football at Harlan, and I believe they all won at least 2 state championships while in H.S. at separate times. Coach Bladt is one of the greatest football coaches in the state and I would argue, in the country. He always has great teams and are never rebuilding, just reloading. This year was supposedly supposed to be a rebuilding year b/c they lost the younder Hoch brother but as we can all see, that is not the case and Harlan will probably be playing for another state championship this year. Rumor on the street in Harlan is that when Coach Bladt retires, his son (who started for USD) will take over the reigns and probably stay coaching there for the next 30-40 years also, hence carrying on the Bladt name in Harlan.
