I am curious to see how Tiller progresses and how the position shakes out. JT obviously has the most game experience. He also has plus athletic ability but hasn't shown the pass accuracy and consistency yet. That doesn't mean that he can't or wont. Another spring and fall of work and possibly getting the majority of the snaps could be just what he needs. It should be an interesting Spring and Fall of practice. Hopefully we will have bowl practices to get everyone even more time to work.

That's the first time I have watched the Sam Richardson highlight tape and he looks pretty good to me. I would still expect him to redshirt to learn the offense and put on a few pounds. He does an extremely good job selling the fake handoffs.

If he's ready to play at this level and can beat out Tiller, Capello and Barnett, then great - start him and get 4 exciting years out of him. If not, then there's no shame in sticking a redshirt on him for next year and giving a year or two to further develop his skills, learn Herman's system, and prepare for BCS-level football.
I think he will probably redshirt just so he can have a year to get used to the speed of division 1 football. There aren't very many QBs who can start as true freshmen and succeed.

take it fwiw.. but i've heard from a few sources that tiller just isnt very coachable and there is a slim chance he's the starter.

Boy if my wife knew i responded to this one,i'm dead. I believe that if james is given the chance he will WIN the starting job. He is accurate and you have not seen him run yet. I spoke to him at length about JT and Barnett and he does not fear going against them at all, he has grown quite close to Barnett and likes him but competition is competition. He is not cocky just confident,i like that. Anyway lets take care of this year first. The only thing he complains about is in practice he said he just is on a knee and not participating but i guess that it is hard to get three Q/Bs reps in a short week of practice. Anyway I hope my wife does not see this, she is the Mayor of our town and it's budget time so i think I'm safe. Go Cyclones

Seriously Mr. Capello, You give us way too much insight and fodder. Thanks for posting, though- even if the Mrs. gives you ****.
Re: Should Tiller be starting qb going into 2011?
Tiller is going to have to get 100% better at the passing game if he plans to start next year. I just don't see him starting.
Re: Should Tiller be starting qb going into 2011?
I can't wait until this board turns against Capello or Barnett the first time they don't play great. That's pretty much what happened to Tiller. He gets thrown into action as a freshman, goes 1-1 as a starter (1 save against Baylor) and he sucks, apparently. I know he didn't play well against UNI but it was one game and the offense as a whole was really struggling at that point and still is judging from our explosive 28 points against the community college we played Saturday.
My hope is Tiller or Capello win the job. The two guys with the most experience in the system. I like Barnett but if he beats out the other two I see that as a negative for next year. Not the future but next year. I tend to agree with many people on here that Sam Richardson is the future just by the things you hear. He seems like the QB Herman has been waiting for.
Re: Should Tiller be starting qb going into 2011?
I haven't read through this.. But I think it should be Capello no question. Even if it's an open competition like I think it should be.. He should win it.
Re: Should Tiller be starting qb going into 2011?
I have no idea who will be the starter.
However, I can predict with 100% certainty that after out first loss next year this board will be lit up with fans screaming that the second string (or 3rd string) QB should be the starter. If the staff were just smart enough to start somebody else we would have won.

What do you like about Capello? I didn't get to see him play earlier this year and I haven't seen him throw at all.
