Re: Terrible Call
I believe a caller on Cyclone Reaction, Sean from Lindale I believe, said it best. If our kicker would have made a FG, we wouldn't be having this conversation. This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to root for the HAWKS. JK, but seriously, we need a new kicker.

Re: Terrible Call
ok... I just saw the play on the news for the 1st time. Why does everyone got their shorts in a bunch? It didn't appear to be a bad play, muchless a bad play call. The ball was thrown and picked off, where's the discussion? Coaches and fans have been stating all night that we didn't execute it. Execute what? Looked ok to me. just looked like Haag stepped in front of it, what's the big deal?

Re: Terrible Call
The call was great, nobody can deny that Franklin was WIDE open. And I love that we tried to end it right there. One time, one shot, run a play you think will work and walk off winners. CPR and staff did that, Kuehl just didn't make a good throw. Nebraska was screwed and they lucked out that it was underthrown. Let's face it, Nebraska is a better team talent-wise than we are, but we whipped their *** today, we just weren't able to put the stamp on it. We beat ourselves in a few areas that cost us that game long before OT (INT's, 3rd down conversions).
Let's get it done next week! I want this team in a bowl!!!

Re: Terrible Call
If the play worked, you would be on your knees in front of Rhoads. Get a clue. Brilliant call, poor execution.
Maybe you should rip on Rhoads for all the other fakes our punter and field goal unit has properly executed. I mean, how foolishly lucky Rhoads got for having them run those plays and not the offense.
Welcome to Moronville.

Re: Terrible Call
I agree. I was shocked and appalled at the call...mostly because it was a pass play into the wind more than anything else. I seriously shouted "NO" at the TV even before the play failed. This was one of the more deflating moments as an Iowa State Fan. This team deserved another shot to beat Neb straight up.

Re: Terrible Call
One other thing that I didn't put in my first post in this thread...
The old coaching adage is that you play for the win on the road and the tie at home, which ISU did at the end of regulation. Then, Nebraska scores in 2 plays in OT to put the pressure on ISU. The Cyclones deposit one in the end zone and bring out the FG unit for the PAT.
Here's the part where the big stones come in...every once in a while, you take a calculated risk. You go against the percentages...you travel the road less traveled. I think Rhoads took that risk today, bucking the "that's what you're supposed to do" and decided to go for the kill shot.
Maybe it's a double standard, favoring the decision to play for the tie at the end of regulation and also loving the decision to go for a win in OT. But I still love the call.

I take it you haven't been an ISU fan for long...

Re: Terrible Call
Poor execution on the fake. That is the reason any football team I coach has the QB as the holder, not the punter.

Welcome to Moronville. So all of the other fake punts and field goals we have tried have been for the game? All of those fakes... if we don't get them we walk off the field because the game is over??? Not even remotely the same situation. That is what I just simply do not get about the people saying it was a great call. We lose if out BACKUP punter does not make a PASS into a stiff wind against the #9 team in the country.
It was a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE call. There is no way around it. You want to win. Line up the offense that has been successful all game long. Now, this does not mean that CPR is a bad coach at all, which is the way that the backers are taking all of the questioning of the call. It simply a HORRIBLE call. It makes it 10X worse that it was against NU. A win against them would have been sweet!!
