Re: Recruiting Thoughts
Pub can't hurt - I assume the reason we only had two commited recruits at the game was the potential for Nebraska to blow us out, which would've been a tough selling point.
I think the best way to get 4-5 star guys is for us to have a couple guys running around "losing" bags full money. I think 200k is the going rate for a Heisman Candidate.

Re: Recruiting Thoughts
The reason for only 2 official visits is because most high schools are now in playoff mode and high school coaches are less likely to allow their players to miss practices for official visits when state titles are on the line.

UT, Florida, Bama, you name any of the top tier programs and their loaded with them. Yes they have championships but they had plenty of playmakers around them. Tebow was a 5 star but we all know how loaded those Florida teams were. Brantley replaces him (4 star) but the guy making all of the plays is Trey Burton (3 star true freshman). It makes for great discussion in alumni meetings when they talk about how they have out-recruited other schools. But the bottom line is this....if the kid steps on the college campus and is all bark and no bite it doesn't matter what his star rating was in high school. Playmakers, playmakers, playmakers win championships not stars ratings. Roy Helu, Ricky Stanzi, Andy Dalton to name a few were all 3 stars. Don't get me wrong, many of the 4-5 star players are great football players (Burkhead 4 star, Ryan Mallett 5 star, Andrew Luck 4 star, Darron Thomas 4 star for example) but these guys are all playmakers at the end of the day. I realize that. But you have to keep in mind we cant turn 2 stars like an Adrian Clayborn and make them 1st round picks. Iowa does a great job at that. But yes 2-3 stars are good. But 4-5 stars make immediate impact. Not saying that 2-3 stars cant and are bad but it would be nice to pick up some 4-5 stars.

Re: Recruiting Thoughts
Star raitings serve two purposes. The first is to give bored alumni something to trash talk about in the offseason and the second is of course to weed out the people that have no clue how recruiting works.
A lot of these kids that get high star counts are highschool seniors that have been shaving for 10 years. I don't want players that have peeked physically, I prefer potential. And there is a lot of potential in this recruiting class.

ISU at present would have trouble recruiting 4-star recruits like Adrian Clayborn and Christian Ballard. But we could get Karl Klug and Broderick Binns type players and develop them. We have the coaches and the facilities to do just as well in player development as Iowa if we recruit the right type of athlete.

Re: Recruiting Thoughts
I wear my ISU gear about 4 days a week and over the last 3 weeks I have been approached by more people asking me about our program and talking football than ever before. I've had at least 3 or 4 strangers strike up conversations with me and comment on how we've got a hell of a coach and that he's got us going places. There's a growing feeling from UT fans that ISU is on the rise and that our coach is the real deal and that they're is some real momentum being built in Ames. Hopefully recruits see the same thing and as long as CPR can keep the wins coming in I see no reason to think we won't start creeping up the recruitment ladder some over the next few seasons.

Re: Recruiting Thoughts
i think i've made myself clear on this topic. I think recruiting from a public perspective is overrated. And good recruiters would tell you the same thing. I bet CPR doesn't give 2 ***** what star they are or how good rivals or whoever thinks they are.
What really matters is:
How well they fit into our system
How much potential they have
How hard of workers they are
Rivals bases their rankings on how quickly they can come in and make an impact. I am disagreeing with this. To clarify: Im not saying rivals isn't important or incorrect or misleading, Im saying there are other more important factors that good recruiters look at when deciding who they want on their team.
Is CPR a good recruiter? Only time will tell. But as of right now for the 2011 class- it appears he is evaluating prospects on multiple levels. Note: THIS IS CLEARLY NOT HOW ALL COACHES EVALUATE PLAYERS! Its the difference between Charlie Weiss' Notre Dame teams and Kirk Ferentz' Iowa team. One gets high school super stars and the other gets players with potential that will develop into collegiate super stars. ... ...Fine lines that pay big dividends.

Re: Recruiting Thoughts
All of this stuff should hopefully impact 2012's recruiting class. The impact of one year is normally reflected in the following year's recruiting class.

I think they will be pretty damn good. Also, we aren't going to find players with immediate impact at every position. Sure we will get one here and there but those of you who expect us to get guys who make us BCS bowl contenders in less than 5-10 years need to get over it. It isn't going to happen.

Re: Recruiting Thoughts
We need kids that are smart, will not give up, physical, determined, team players, who have a strong work ethic, and who can make plays
