I just don't really like the idea of pretty much telling the D pre-snap that we're going to run the ball. The safeties can walk up and stack on the line.
If we want to get him on the field more, I would like to see Shontrelle get 5 or so carries through the game for ARob in the normal formations. It gives us a better chance to get him out in space anyway and I don't see Shontrelle as a guy that can run right into an 8-9 man box but rather our O-line getting him through the first wave and let him break the safeties' ankles 10 yards down field

Re: I want Shontrelle.....
We just pushed the #7 team in the country to OT and we very easily could be talking about a big upset victory today.
Based on that, I fully trust this coaching staff to make the right choices about personnel on the field and who gives us the best chance to win. The RB position is much more than just the runner's ability in the open field. A Rob does so much as a leader and in the passing game (both in blitz pickup and receiving).
Just wait, next year there'll be threads on here from people complaining about Shontrelle because he doesn't do something well and wishing we still had ARob.

Shontrelle is not ready to be an every down back. He doesn't block like ARob and he isn't the receiver ARob is. The drop off as a complete back is pretty big when comparing the two. I think he will get there some day but he isn't there yet.

My guess (& that's all it is) is that Shontrelle isn't reliable enough in the backfield on passing downs for the coaching staff to trust him to read/react to the blitz yet. So, when he's in, we're almost guaranteed to run the ball and that makes us a little too one-dimensional when he's on the field, which opposing defenses can quickly pick up on.
Again, just a guess.

Rhoads needed someone in the game on Saturday that he could trust to get yards and hang on to the ball. Between the KU and NU games, there were may too many fumbles. When Woody fumbled we were at least close enough for 3, maybe even 7, points and we hand it back to Nebby. Minor thread derail.... It did not matter that he touched the ball. It was a kickoff so the ball was live until we downed it. I know that wasn't an important part of your point, but I thought I should mention it anyway. -
Re: I want Shontrelle.....
I agree with everyone about Arob.....dont want to limit him, love the way he's running the ball. Its more about putting another explosive player on the offense and if your going to burn the year of eligibility, then lets use him.
My only thought is, the really good offensive coordinators adjust their system to their players. They create mismatches by utilizing the most gifted players in positions where it dictates the defenses hands. I have full 100% trust in arob, but, i think the offense could be more dynamic if the two most gifted offensive players we have were on the field at the same time rather then opposite times....

Re: I want Shontrelle.....
He may be the most explosive, but A-Rob is still the best. AR understands the offense better and more importantly has more experience than SJ.

Re: I want Shontrelle.....
Why do people think getting Sh.J more touches equates to taking away from ARob?
-
Re: I want Shontrelle.....
I think ARob is going to end his days at ISU as a top 5 RB yardage wise in school history. Yet some want others to play that spot. SJ days will come. ARob brings so much more experence and does the little things well.

Re: I want Shontrelle.....
I somewhat agree. ARob has definitely been getting the job done, but I agree with a few of the other posters in that I would've liked to have seen Shontrelle get a few touches maybe earlier in the game when Woody was in there. Woody seems to be better in short yardage and later in the game when we need to pound it out a bit. Shontrelle is so explosive when he does get in there that you just wonder why he's not seeing the field a bit more. However, I also agree that the coaches know what they're doing and there's definitely a reason why they didn't think he would create a favorable matchup.

Re: I want Shontrelle.....
The staff made the point earlier in the season that Woody has a huge advantage over Shontrelle, in that, being around for a redshirt season, he knows the offense.
In other words, Shontrelle makes mistakes. Mistakes that he won't make next season.
They may not advertise what those mistakes are, but I would rather the offense not be limited by what Shontrelle is familiar with, on those plays he is in the game. Good defensive coordinators take note of those tendencies.
We got a new Marshall here in town, and his name's Paul Rhoads, and the times, they is a'changin'.
