Re: Paul Rhoads on Daniel Kuehl
I have no problem if Rhoads sounded defensive if he was defending the failure of a player to pull off a play that Rhoads called, and that had been practiced, if he was pressed with Q's about the execution, and not about the decision itself.
Especially since Rhoads already said it was a methodically planned play based on what the staff had seen during the game, and he already said in the postgame that "we just failed to execute."
It'd be a little different if there was an in-game option for a holder to fake, and the player decided to use it at that point, and then failed. I can't imagine a college coach allowing that much freedom, but I mention that purely for perspective.
Note: I won't blame the wind for the bad throw, but when I saw him float it to a wide-open receiver, the throw looked like it had just the right touch.
Re: Paul Rhoads on Daniel Kuehl
it was a great call but going forward it would be smarter to have someone a tad more athletic as a holder. Like a backup qb or wr.
Re: Paul Rhoads on Daniel Kuehl
He was defensive because he is trying to keep this team's heads up and get them ready to play. You will all rememeber after the Iowa, Utah, and Oklahoma games when Rhoads said things like we were getting better and we didn't play all that bad, etc. Some of you were calling for him to really get mad at them. He knew his team and knew that in order to get through the toughest schedule in the nation with no bye weeks, he had to be calm and positive. Same thing this week. We've all spent plenty of time thinking 'what if' the last couple of days (even though most of us would want him to make the same decision again). Imagine all of those players doing the same thing.

I disagree......do you have any idea how athletic DK is or not? He was plenty athletic when he executed a perfect option pitch on the fake FG against UNI.
I think 9 times out of 10, DK makes that pass. I also think a backup QB or WR would make that pass 9 times out of 10.

Kuehl was a defensive back in high school for a 4A state qualifier. I think he has some athleticism and probably as much as a lot of our QBs.

Correct. People need to start looking for some facts before they start bumping their gums.

IMHO, Coach was reminding folks of the good things DK has done, what he's capable of doing. One bad play doesn't change that. He was defending his player, but not overly. That would be Mike Gundy.

You worry too much.

Yep, Deon Sanders was a great athlete that could probably throw a football for the falcons.....LOL, some of you folks are funny. I am going to make a slight assumption her, but I will guess that DK will not be put in that position again in his short time left with the team. I will also bet that you will see a backup QB become the holder on kicks in 2011 and beyond.
CPR is sticking up for his player as he should. He is a great coach who will make adjustments in the future.

You have know idea how athletic this guy is. The thing about these specialists is the usually have tremendous ball skills because that is what they do all day during practice, and the have excellent hand eye coordination.
Re: Paul Rhoads on Daniel Kuehl
Spot on clonestar12. CPR did just the right thing in defending Kuehl, but he also is smart enough to realize that a good coach evaluates what happens in games and makes good adjustments for the future. Kuehl panicked when he had to make that throw, and that's understandable for a kid that never played qb and was a db in high school where he never had to throw a pass in a game situation. I also think there's a good chance we see a qb as a holder next year since CPR likes to use fakes more than our past coaches, and you have to have a kid capable of throwing a good pass under pressure.

Except the statement that Kuehl "has as much athletic ability as a lot of our Qbs" isnt a fact. Its a statment pulled straight from someone's rear-end.

yeah, I am sure that thought never ever crossed CPRs mind prior to saturday.:jimlad: I mean he never tried a fake with Kuehl before.:jimlad:
And surely a punter should not be expected to throw a pass in a pressure situation. I mean look at Michigan State. That guy shouldn't have completed that pass:jimlad:

If this were truly the case, if we're going to bench the holder because he misfired on a pass, then wouldn't SJ, Darks, and Money all have been benched by now for their numerous dropped passes this season, most of them coming at critical moments? Wouldn't Mahoney have been benched by now? If he makes one of those two FGs missed on Saturday, this game doesn't even go to overtime.
Considering the way CPR has coached the last two years, it wouldn't surprise me IN THE LEAST if CPR has Kuehl run the fake FG play in one of the next two (or three games), particularly if the game is on the line.

Actually, I said "probably has as much athleticism as a lot of our QBs." It isn't that big of a stretch either. The kid is 6' 193 and started as a DB for a 4A team that made it to the second round of state playoffs. It isn't a stretch to think he is very athletic or atleast as athletic as Bueker, Bobby Brown, Ryan Gent, Austin McBeth, Capello, etc. Let's face it.... AA, and Tiller are not going to be the holders as they are busy taking snaps. Barnett is redshirting so we are talking about Bueker, Capello and a bunch of walkon QBs.
The guy was also a team captian for Heelan so he has leadership skills as well. My point is people throw out that he isn't an athlete because he is the punter. It is possible to be a punter and an athlete and people should really research a little before throwing out that he is not athletic. Who knows, he might have been a QB in Jr high or as a fosh in high school. People just don't know
