And this is why I love College Football
What the Hawkeyes should root for?
"Iowa State to beat Colorado. Iowa nearly got a nice BCS boost from its in-state rival last week, but the Cyclones couldn't knock off Nebraska in overtime. The Hawkeyes benefit from every Iowa State win the rest of the way. And yes, I realize most Iowa fans will refuse to root for Iowa State on principle."

I've tried to explain this to people before. Root against us one week. If you win and we win afterwards, it's just going to boost your overall status. Hoping we fail is just a dumb way to look at it.
What ever happened to truth, justice and the American Way? -
Re: And this is why I love College Football
I would hope not all Iowa or Iowa State fans act like junior high kids. I'm hoping Iowa State wins out and goes to a bowl, why the heck not? Two teams from the state of Iowa in a bowl game again, yeah that isn't a bad thing.

I can see the point of this, but ISU really has very little impact on Iowa's BCS chances. Iowa needs to win out to get a sniff. The Big 10 will likely get two teams and what OSU, Wisky, and MSU do is a lot more important than what ISU does.

I mean, we're talking going to a bowl vs not going with this win. If ISU were going to major bowls, sure, it would help iowa's BCS rankings, but it would also erode their recruiting base, which is way more important. A 2-10 ISU is MUCH better for UI than a 10-2 ISU. If you really root for a team, you want their rivals that they recruit against to lose every single game. In a small way, every ISU win hurts iowa just like every iowa win hurts ISU.

I will never forget the days in basketball where we could say 3 Iowa teams are in the NCAA tourney. 2 in the BCS would be nice to boast.

Re: And this is why I love College Football
I don't buy it. Sure, I'll want ISU to not be terrible, but unless the Cyclones wer going to a BCS bowl game themselves, I'm not sure it would boost Iowa's own BCS standings that much.
Realistically, we need to win out, and have either MSU or Wisconsin lose in order to reach a BCS bowl game. Winning out would put Iowa tied for the conference title, but the Arizona loss would come back to bite us, as it would drop our overall record. In that case, BCS standings wouldn't matter. If MSU loses either of it's last two games (and Iowa wins out), Iowa will be heading to the at-large bid if it's there. If Wisconsin loses any of it's final games, Iowa will be headed to the Rose. Those are pretty much the only rooting interests that matter for the Hawks.

This, if Iowa wins out they will be in the top 10 (already in the top 14 to be eligible for an at large pick anyway) so they won't need to jump anyone, at this point it is a lot more important for Wisconsin and/or Michigan St to lose then it is for ISU to win.

Re: And this is why I love College Football
In this day and age with the non AQ's looming in the BCS picture and the Big 10 being a 4 way tie right now, Iowa could use as many ISU wins as possible.
Iowa has Michigan State as its best win, and then I'd assume a host of teams close to ISU's 5-5 mark. I'm not up on the Big 10 standings, but I don't think they've have another great win from a computer standpoint on there.
If Iowa beats NW and OSU, then they don't need any ISU help.

Other than that, I'd love to see ISU go bowling again.

I think that's what he's trying to say, Iowa has to win out regardless of what everyone else does to have a chance at a BCS game. That will be hard enough for them to accomplish.
