Yes, I think something is wrong. I can't blame Tom Herman for drops, injuries, or players not minding their academic business.
As far as the argument that Wally's players improve, and Herman's don't--the players who "improved" on defense are either fifth years seniors (O'Connell, Parker and Sandvig), or guys who were redshirting freshmen--or not even on the roster prior to two years ago (Laing, Maggitt, Knott, Klein, etc). Leonard Johnson's improvement has clearly been accredited by staff to a sudden dedication to the film room--not to personal tutelage by Wally.
Offensive players who "haven't improved" over the past two years would include Collin Franklin, Alex Alvarez, Ben Lamaak, Brayden Burris, Darius Reynolds and Josh Lenz. Do you guys really want to go that direction?
Oh, I'll toss AA and his conference stats in if you like. Why not?
Wait--that would represent improvement over the course of a season, wouldn't it? Oh darn, that's just logical. I hate facts like that!!!
Sandvig and Occonnell improved. Holy cow. What are you watching? They might be the worst safeties to ever play at ISU. I hate to say that because they are ISU players and worked hard in their career. They just aren't capable of playing at the DI level.
Coaches are paid good money to get results. Everything comes back to them. They decide which players player and what drills to run in practice. They are coaches for a reason. Wally has done more with little.
Herman has had the best quarterback efficiency wise in ISU history. That is a fact. He has had one of the best running backs in ISU history based on stats. He had returning players all over the offense.
You have got to be kidding me. HE IS THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. THE SUCCESS OR LACK OF SUCCESS IS DIRECTLY HIS RESPONSIBILITY.
It's funny that guys like Mike Leach never have down years even when they take over teams. ISU does not have lower than top 60 talent on offense yet they are 100 in ranking.
This team will look totally different next season and not just because seniors are leaving. CPR can no longer allow mediocrity. As he said last night, "things will change.".
Amazingly you went away when we beat Texas with all that Texas talent and you stayed away when we played NU. Amazingly AA, ARob, Williams, Knott and Klein were big pieces in those games. Then amazingly, you come back after losses and are touting Texas and Florida players again saying they aren't playing strictly because they are underclassmen.
And of course the rotation will change. They have to replace Williams. But by your logic, Reynolds, Darks and Johnson will start because they will be seniors and have more experience. See how silly that sounds? That isn't the case and hasn't been the case this year. There is no reason Blanton and Jennert shouldn't be playing this year if they are better...none. I hope like hell that Johnson and Darks don't see the field next year. I hope West and Gary beat everyone out. I also hope that a QB steps up and is better than what we have. I don't care who it is or where they are from.
And I doubt you will eat crow. Every time you have been proven wrong you chnage the topic or go away.
As for the guys you listed..
Alvarez- Status quo since McFarland
Franklin- was hurt last year and was impressive when healthy
Lenz- Similar to last year and has had drops this year all year and that has started against NIU
Reynolds- I thought he improved this year but I would expect that as he never really played WR until last year and he was hurt
Now look at the rest of the two deeps.
We need a more accurate QB and until we get one, we are going to struggle. We were one of the worst teams on 3rd down in the Big 12 and struggled to score points. Teams were starting to stack the box and dare us to throw on them and we couldn't make plays. If Tiller starts next year, we will have one of the worst offenses in the country. Just my opinion, but an inaccurate passer and poor receivers will hurt us for a couple of years.
On a positive note, I think the defense has a lot of promise. Lattimer and Nelson will help us get a better pass rush and the LBs looked very good this year.
