    Starting d-backs

I've seen a lot of threads on the d-line and tons on the QB competition. Anyone have any ideas who's going to start in at safety? I haven't followed recruiting that closely to know who's coming in this year.

i think washington is a lock at 1. broomfields name thrown around a lot for the other, but i'm not sure about him starting. i think he gets a lot of reps, or if there is an injury sure, but not game 1. i'm hoping givens or bennett.

    J. Washington, Broomfield, Givens, Brooks, and possibly Bennett depending if he is moving to LB completely or not. Plus I think with the size of Brackens he would be a perfect SS.

I think Benton might be at one of the safety spots.

if mattison or morgan can step right into his role, then i could see it. but i don't want to have a major dropoff there for what i feel would be a minor upgrade at safety.

Yeah it really depends on how good the other safeties are. If Benton is a major upgrade it would make sense. If not they'll leave him at CB/NB. We did play alot of nickel this year.

I don't see this as too big of drop off, I mean Sims was a stud and O'Connell held his own, but Sanvig was a horrible tackler, even though this year was way better than last year. I would say we have a lot more depth here, and the secondary in general is a no worry. Because Benton, LJ will have huge senior years, great leadership right there....

i have a questio bout our safeties and corner backs. we have had a very good dback at 5-9 in david sims... he has been our premier dback the last two years....why are we not recruiting backs that are 6-0 180-210 lbs and dbacks that r 4.0 seconds in the 40...we have recruited some 5-7 dbacks. ...they maybe good athletes but they cannot out jump a 6-4 or 6-6 wr or a 6-6 tight end. i find it difficult for a 5-7 dback to stay with this size of receivers.

How many jump balls were thrown at us last year. Out of those how many did Jeremy Reeves get beat on simply because of his height. At this point, I am more worried about covering on routes than getting beat on jump balls. It is of no concern to me. We need speed before height. If we can get both like we may with Lynn, great.

If we were "choosing up sides" Jeremy Reeves would be one of the first guys I would pick. That guys gives his all every play.

In the Iowa game he missed a pick 6, because Stanzi threw it a little high (no pun intended).

    Re: Starting d-backs

Benton has a ton of experience at NB and CB. He's a good tackler and decent in coverage. I would rather have him playing ever down at safety than 1/2 the downs at NB. But, the key is where they are weaker. Does Morgan playing NB hurt the team less than Brooks/Givens/Broomfield starting at safety? No idea, but we'll find out a lot this spring.

For my money, I'd bet that Benton and Washington are our two starting safeties. And although neither of them have started at safety before, both have seen plenty of defensive snaps...especially Benton.

    Re: Starting d-backs

Well on my 2011 season on NCAA11 I moved Benton to SS and he did pretty well. So that gets my vote!

Overall, I think we have a decent group of safeties, just none with a ton of experience. My guess would be Washington and Givens unless they decide to move Benton.

    Re: Starting d-backs

I would say Washington and Givens are the front runners. Givens was a JUCO they recruited last season to redshirt due to having 3 seniors already at those positions. They also redshirted JUCO transfer Jon Caspers, who is an o-lineman, who will step into the guard spot vacated by Alverez. I believe the specifically recruited him to redshirt so he could start for 2 years instead of one. Givens probably came in, was even with O'Connell and Sandvig, so they felt redshirting him to gain valuable knowledge of what it takes to play in the Big 12.
