The short answer is "no."

The short and long answers are no. You have to actually have a GOOD defensive line to run a 3-4. Your defensive tackle has to be actually able to hold his own, and our two tackles combined last year along with the ends couldn't do squat. A 3-4 would be a nightmare.

a 3-4 is not a defense that you can just decide to switch to on a whim. It requires some specific types of players, players that we just don't have. We don't have a 3-4 nose tackle, we don't have 3-4 defensive ends, and we don't have 3-4 linebackers. It's easy to swap between a 3-4 and 4-3 if you're playing Madden, but in real life it's doesn't work that way.

I think Rump and perhaps McDonough could be capable but in a 3-4 set we would need guys like Nelson and Lattimer to be OLB and we would need bigger DEs. We don't have that personnel.

The op logic is flawed. Obviously doesn't understand the 3-4. We would actually need more DL right now since the OLB's are 99% of the time DE's in the 4-3 defense. Also the DL is far and away the most important part, especially the NT. We don't have a NT.

Nope, you don't just switch to the 3-4 overnight, if you want to run it, you have to get a DC that specializes in it, and the correct personnel. This isn't NCAA '11.

I hate when people say "this", but this. The Packers drafted BJ Raji, a nose tackle, in the first round of the draft when they were switching to the 3-4 because the NT is the most important position in the 3-4. They need to occupy 2 or 3 blockers on the OL so the other players on defense can make plays.

i think ppl like to think of it as putting your best players on the field. but it doesn't just work that way. you gotta work with what you have. the "system" or the way we line up isnt the problem.

I do think McDounough would be a real good DE, and Rump could hold his own. Lattimer would be a good OLB and obviously Knott and Klien at ILB. But there's still some holes and not enough depth.
