Re: Where have all the sportswriters gone?

Interesting article in the Dec. 20 issue of SI by Steve Rushin titled "Get with The Program." It's about sportswriting without sportswriters. A company called StatSheet (statsheet.com) publishes a website for each Division I team, complete with game stories written by a software program.

Apparently, once the box score for the game is entered, the program goes to work writing the story. The company plans to expand into other sports, financial news, etc.

This will only add to dry and mundane regurgitation of facts. I spend very little time reading game summary's based off nothing more than a box score with a few quotes thrown in.

I spend much more time digging into angles heading into a matchup or on in depth breakdowns when the event is over. Much of the time this can be done on tv, rather than print media however.

Daily Cyclone is the statsheet app for an Android phone, I downloaded it a few weeks ago. I aol un-install it after this post. Each site has a replica of Rosy the robot from the Jetsons with the school logo on the chest, regardless of desire for quick, cheap info this is over the line.

I can attest to that. It's a great job, if you like to work a lot of hours and get paid very little.
