Houston is a pretty decent program and Kevin Sumlin is an up and coming coach.
Assuming Sumin stays at Houston for a few years, which is a big assumption, I can see something behind English's decision. One of the better non-BCS teams, close to home in Texas with a good young coach.
The reality is that Sumlin was mentioned for at least half the open jobs this year and I doubt he will be around for all 4-5 years of he current classes commitment.
I have said it before... Some kids like the spotlight, to play in big time games against big time competition and showcase their abilities against future NFL caliber talent. Apparently English isn't one of those kids. He sounds like one of the kids that wants to take the easy road, play lessor competition so they can dominate a bunch of C-USA scrubs and feel like they accomplished something.
My take... we want kids that may not have 5 star talent but they aren't afraid to go head to head against a kid that does have 5 star talent and punch them right in the mouth. It is a mentality, a chip on their shoulder, a desire to compete... those are the kids we want.
Good luck to English... enjoy putting up big numbers against jv level talent in C-USA. Maybe just maybe if he dominates those scrubs enough someone outside of the Houston metro area might know his name.
I have a feeling that Iowa State backed off of this kid...
No inside information, but everyone need to keep in mind that an official visit is a two way street. It's not all about the school selling themselves to a recruit. The recruit also has to convince the staff that he has the intangibles required to be successful at the D1 level. More than one recruit has raised doubts about how well they will fit in based on the impression that they make on a visit. It's not all about starts and highlight videos.
