Anyway we land good future DT as preferred walk-on?

Specifically Bret Johnson from Story City, kind has a Carstens look to him???

With all due respect, this kid is nothing like Jordan Carstens. I say that because I know first hand that Carstens worked harder than any player that has ever played at ISU. Period. No offense to the Johnson kid, but he doesn't have the same frame as Carstens and has much less athletic ability.

I agree, maybe I chose Carstens because of the initial walk-on status, I am trying to find optimism in DT with past history. Another great that started as walk-on Morehead( though he was DE).

I don't know if I would calll him a great. He was only used in spot duty, and had some great plays, but was getting spelled by guys like Berryman, Cephus Johnson, and the like. He was part of a very good rotation, and a contributor even though he was undersized. I like Carstens as a story better though as he eventually made the NFL. Moorehead did make it to Paddy's every weekend, though.

Nope, never on the staff but the kid literally slept in the weightroom after his senior year of high school. Everytime somebody laughed at him for saying he wanted to play football at Iowa State, he would work that much harder. I challenge you to find anybody who worked harder in the classroom, field, etc. than he did.

Disagree with Morehead spelling Berrymen and Johnson, he is the career leader in sacks. It may have been that way at one point but his last few years it was not....

I can't because I am not that involved with any one player, but the fact that we have walk-ons like Jesse Smith that become all Big 12 players makes me believe that Carstens isn' the only Rudy candidate our team has ever had.

He was a good sack artist, but he isn't close to the top of the list of DEs that I have seen play. The guy was a third down specialist. I don't know what his roster weight listed him, but he was a small DE, really only suitable for the pass rush. I believe he weighed maybe 240 when I was at school, and possibly 250 was his listed weight at the end of his career. Having stood next to the guy, I believe those quantities were generous. He looked like a lot of guys in the bar. Also having seen Berryman after his first prison stint, I would say the difference in size was staggering. Not that this is all about size, but I don't remember him being a run stopper myself.

Dude, don't get me wrong Berryman was a stud and would have way bigger if not for legal issues, but we are comparing a walk on(pure heart to achieve what he did) and a pure recruited athlete, apples to oranges. I am not saying Morehead was the greatest but he did play all 4 years and is the career sack leader...
