Quarterbacks....
I hope everyone has gone to Cyclones.com and listened to Coach Rhoads talk QB's. If not, he emphasized the QB play must improve for Iowa State to compete with a tougher schedule. He is looking for:
-decision making
-accuracy
-ability to move team
-a leader
He had good things to say about all four QB's but said Tiller is number one going into spring with Jantz two and Capello three.
Seems apparent they will look at all, but he obviously CPR has high hopes for Steele Jantz. They know what JT can do, he started the last game, but it's open competition. I believe Jantz will be number one at the end of Spring, with Capello at backup. But who knows?

Moves the team in practice and moves them on the field. It wouldn't surprise me if any of the three won the starting job

Re: Quarterbacks....
I don't really care as long we get capable play at the position. I really have no interest in sitting through another 52-0 game in Norman again this fall.
I have to admit after watching all the videos on Cyclones.com I'm more optimistic about the QBs.

Re: Quarterbacks....
I haven't checked it yet, but by what you just said it sounds like hes describing Capello to me.

I have to admit after watching all the videos on Cyclones.com I'm more optimistic about the QBs. I agree wholeheartedly. I don't care who wins the job, but it must improve over last year.
I've said on here many times before... we CANNOT win many games this year if Tiller wins the job AND it's the same Jerome Tiller that played last season. If Tiller wins the job, he had better be quite a bit improved over last season IMO for us to have any success.
If, as someone else mentioned above, the starter ends up being Jantz and Capello is the backup... then I hope Tiller considers moving to WR. I've always felt he'd make a great WR. Marvin McNutt at Iowa did it, and probably will now be a WR in the NFL. Tiller will never be a QB in the NFL IMO... so if he has any dreams of playing at the next level it will be at a different position.
And no, I've not given up hope on Tiller at QB. I think he can win this job, but he has to show some major improvement from last season.

Re: Quarterbacks....
The fact that Jantz immediately starts out as the #2 QB tells you the staff wants him to be the guy. Jerome is now entering his 4th year in the program, Capello his third, Barnett his second, and Jantz is already ahead of two entering his first practice. That tells you how high the staff feels about this kid. He will be number one when ISU takes the field against UNI.
I, as well FootballinTexas, are very high on Barnett. Rhoads said he is behind only because of his maturity and understanding of the system. I fully expect him to grab some attention this spring.
If Tiller is still on this team come fall, it will most likely be at a different position. The way Rhoads talked, Capello will be the number two guy behind Jantz. He seemed very high on him, but it is obvious the staff wants Steele to start.

Maybe he comes in at #2 just for the simple fact that he is one of the two oldest players with a little experience. Jerome get's the #1 nod simply because he is the returning backup. This is Barnett's first spring so he will naturally be behind JC and JT. IMO. But you could be right on.

Re: Quarterbacks....
Watching the video without the knowledge of Jantz and Barnett's numbers I was thouroughly impressed with #2 and he seemed to be the most accurate out of all. I was even more excited to see that #2 just so happened to be Jantz.

Re: Quarterbacks....
Watching the videos I thought they all looked about the same, minus Tiller simply because he wasn't in much of the videos. JC, SJ, and JB all completed passes and each had at least one dropped or missed. Their footwork looked good and velocity looked good. JT was still a little wild in his drop and seemed to over-extend because his feet were pretty wide on his 3rd step plant to delivery.
I did hear a couple things that surprised me in video #2 near the end. On the post route that Jantz overthrew, Herman was actually telling him where to throw the ball. Surprising for the guy that is heads and shoulders above your other guys. In the same video, in the next frame, Barnett checks down to the drag and Mess says "good read JB" and Herman follows with "great job JB". Surprising for the guy that doesn't understand the offense.

We get it. You don't like Jantz. He is not head and shoulders above - he is #2 on the depth chart. Jantz has had 1 day of practice, Barnett has had 1 year.

Well just hand JB the job then. He obviously has a perfect and complete grasp of the offense based on those videos. Good to know.

As for QBs, Jantz probably looked the best there. He seemed to throw a cleaner ball but they all looked alright. That's an awful small amount to judge the QBs on. If I was betting, I would bet on Jantz but I don't know that i would put money on anyone not getting the job for sure.

Easily had the strongest arm. Tiller looked good as well as Capello. In all honesty, Jantz looked the worst, but it's the first practice on two, one minute clips. The real show for us fans will come April 16th.
