Watching the funnel drill, James White (#8) looked really good. Almost every run he took all the way through.
If he's really #3 or #4 on the depth chart - wow! What a depth chart for RB!
I look forward to seeing him (and all the other RB's) run through another team's D like in the funnel drills.
Also, the defense and offense looked to be pretty evenly matched in the funnel drills posted. I think that's probably a good thing for both sides of the ball.

White really excited me when Chizik got him, and I was glad he stayed on board. He was a great player for a great Dallas Skyline team. A little small, but great receiving ability in space, very fast, and kept his pad level down. The negative always appeared to be vision. He was pretty much a one cut and go guy, who didn't make a lot of people miss in space. He is pretty much a clone of Alexander Robinson in my mind. His first few years, he couldn't make any YAC, but he improved greatly his last two years.

Likely this. Watch the Ken Pope interview. He still mentions Shontrelle and Woody first. White has been very impressive in the videos though.
I hope 1 or 2 rise to the top of the group, but having this type of potential depth at the RB position is a very, very good thing.
Also, don't forget the talented RBs in this years class. I think Nealy and Standard will do well, and will likely get to redshirt even if things don't go as planned.

Hes built like a FB and runs like a FB, I do not like those type of players at RB unless its short yardage situations of course. It just doesnt work (and dont try to compare Woody to the likes of that Wisconsin RB). There just isnt many that can play RB when they are built for FB. Hollis, Nealy, White, and Standard need to step up and get that 2nd string position down.

We run the spread. If last year taught me anything it's that the FB in the spread IS the second back. Lining up in a two-back set from the gun with SJ and Woody is going to be killer.
We have two elusive runners in Johnson and White, and two contact runners in Woody and Hollis. You need both kinds of guys in your back field. Johnson and Woody a clearly that starting duo and White and Hollis are the backups.
As talented as they look, I doubt White and Hollis will see much playing time this year unless Johnson or Woody get hurt. Those guys are just too good.

I think Hollis will have around the same carries as Woody. SJ is not a 75 snap RB, and Woody is a specialist.

Did you watch the Texas game last year? It can work if run well - Woody had a great game that day.

I don't think that Woody is really the 2nd string back. He's a situational back that will probably see some H-Back duties along with his usual short yardage and goal line. I think if Shontrelle got hurt, you'd see either White or Hollis getting more carries than Woody because he's not an every down back.

some spread teams greatly utilize power backs. look at owen schmidt, and tim tebow.
That said, their speed backs were ALSO required to run up the middle. Contrary to previous running schemes, coaches would always run big backs up the middle and speed backs around the edge. Florida changed that in 08

This is what my son told me that Herman told him in regards to being #1 vs #2. Woody can block for Shontrelle, Shontrelle cant block for Woody. The rb's dont consider themselves as 1,2,3,4 etc...., they all get along, help and support each other, some more than others. The knowledge of the system and the way it is played in a situation is key to what the rb's are going to e doing this year. All I can tell you from talking to Jeff about what they are going to be doing, is that it will be "different" than last year. The talent level at this position and each one has a different strength which they possess and can utilize. So when a back is listed as #1, it really doesn't mean much...in that a play may designed for him, and another designed for the others special ability, which at that point will make him "#1". These backs are being utilized this year in more of a different method than the past. just stay tuned and enjoy the show.
Guys i complained all last season about the staff not utilizing IMO the most talented position on this team. To me, i was always wishing to see Herman use Shontrelle and Robinson in the same backfield as receiving targets rather then rushing targets. Its an easy read for the qb depending on how the defense adjusts. If they stay in the base defense which would be expected with only a 2 wr set, then we have them in a position that we could take advantage of our talent.
So i've taken a stab at how this would work......
This puts the emphasis on the qb to read the safetys. If they start to drop with the two wr running flys then the qb's progression will be the TE and then the left RB. If the two safetys move towards the line of scrimmage, then the throw is over the top to the wr....
Bottom line is there will be pressure applied to the Left and Middle LB on the underneath routes as the OLB will follow the TE crossing and the MLB will be expected to catch up to the RB out of the backfield. If they switch, then the TE will leave the MLB as he will be up to speed as the switch occurs and the route should equal big gain as the wr is clearing the safety.
I hope the DIFFERENT aspect to the RB position this season will be utilizing them more in the passing game and giving those guys the ball in space and watch out....>BIG PLAYS!!!!
