Re: First Spring Scrimmage Today
I think it is entirely possible that Steele and Tiller have already showed they are a level above Capello and Barnett right now. From the highlights, to me, Jantz clearly appears to be the best QB.

Re: First Spring Scrimmage Today
I predict the quarterback battle will continue well into the fall. We haven't had a starter emerge without a fight since Seneca. Meyer & Arnaud's battles continued well into the season before they secured the starting role. Some players look great in practice, but fail to perform in the heat of battle. The opposite is also true. I want to see who is clutch when the bullets are flying. No one here wants to wait that long, but I'm afraid it's the only way we'll know for sure. Honestly, I believe speculation at this point is a pure waste of time.

At ISU he has had more RB talent than at Rice. The passing game has taken time to develop. AA was not a spread QB, and I think Herman got as much as he could out of him.
I think Jantz and Barnett have the skillset that TH wants in a QB. Jantz is the more physically/mentally mature, but needs to learn the playbook real quick. JB has to fully mature and learn what it takes to be a QB at the college level.
Chances are, with a new starting Qb this year, we will still run the ball a lot and take advatage of our talented RBs and good OL. Hopefully the passing game will be able to make some strides and gell early in the year. If so, the offense should really start clicking. Think about what you stated for a minute. They had a great TE and great WR and a pretty damn good QB. Yet they ran the ball almost as much as they threw. I was meerly commenting that it is silly for people to think that Herman's offense will be a Texas Tech pass happy offense. It never has been even when he had more talent in the passing game than the backfield.
The running game was the same...zone read. That means the defense determines who gets the carries. Clement didn't carries because Herman called his number, he got carries because the defense chose to take away get RB. This is why Rhoads has stated that our QB will have to be able to make plays with his feet. Defenses will scheme to put the ball inthe QBs hands on zone read.
Herman has never passed the ball more than 57% of the time. This is not an air it out, Texas Tech type of spread. It is not a run zone run, run , run offense. It is a combo of both. Which I actually like. Keep the defense guessing and make them defend both.

You put in systems, and stick with them. If the coaches don't know what they are doing, then blame CPR, it's his team. I like where we may be headed. Minnesota is not a good example. Three years a couple different coordinators. We are on three years and have the same ones in place. No one is calling for Herman's head. Most just want to see an increase in production.Herman isn't even on the hot seat so he will get four years to get his system in place and running. No one thinks it should be humming after two years but some of us think we should see progress.
Mr Capello hinted that it took James' high school teams four years to learn the system following a complete over haul. The advantage a college staff has, is they can recruit kids that have played in similar systems and have the talents for that system. they have kids that have more experience and are more mature. Whereas a high school only has the talent that resides in their district. They may have kids that have only played the game for a year or two. If high school kids can learn the system in 4 years than college kids should be able to do it it 3-4 years. That is all I am saying.

Re: First Spring Scrimmage Today
While everyone else is debating about coordinators, quarterbacks and schemes, I'll simply say that it would be nice to have an offensive line that is consistent and effective throughout the season. We got a new Marshall here in town, and his name's Paul Rhoads, and the times, they is a'changin'.

I hope they know who the QB is after the spring.. might not happen but I think it would be best for our starter to get the majority of the snaps going into the season.

I too doubt that we will ever get too pass happy and I am ok with that especially with the talent we have been bringing in at RB lately.
I just had a feeling that our RB talent has influenced some of the play calling while the passing game is still getting established. Hermans last year at Rice they almost scored at will (except against far superior talent). When they had both the running and passing game going they were very efficient, even if it was against a lower overall level of competition. If we can get Big12 level horses to run it with similar efficiency, we should be able to go to work in the near future.
