RB's vs LB's Practice #9

The RB's looked really good in pass protection blocking against the #2 LB's.

However, in passing routes, the #1 LB's totally dominated. And how about newcomer #55 Jevohn Miller? Intercepted what was looking like the only completion of the day for the RB's with a nicely timed cut to the ball. He sure looks good AND big for a true freshman.

The RB's and QB's have some work to do on the RB passing routes.

And I sure hope the #1 LB's weren't blowing up the RB's in pass protection and that isn't why we didn't see any of those.

ISU really hasn't run RB's in pass release patterns much, so it's understandable why they got beat this early into the new season. Just need to get better at it with repetition.

The LB's sure look good in this drill and it's good to see a few newcomers looking good in #7 Jeremiah George and #55 Jevohn Miller.

Also on DL vs. OL, #90 Cleyon Laing and #97 Stephen Ruempolhamer were the only D linemen to get through the OL. They both looked good, even better than last year as Shane Burnham said in his interview following practice.

If that drill was a game there would be about a dozen flags thrown for each set due to holding or pass interference. I wouldn't take too much out of those except effort.

Yeah, I noticed that but that seems to happen quite a bit in real games as well.

Jevohn Miller has great hands from having played wide receiver for a majority of snaps for his BGM-Brooklyn team the last two years of high school. It was weird seeing a 6'2" 225lb receiver split out who was bigger than most of the lineman on the field for his Class A school, until you saw him run past the fastest DB on the opposing team and make a one-handed catch. If he can touch the ball, it's likely he'll pull it in for the INT instead of batting it down, it's like he has suction cups on his hands. Against North Mahaska this past fall their QB lofted one over the middle, he jumps up with one hand, palms the entire football to make the INT and in one continuous motion tucks it in and takes it back for a touchdown. He was making all these kinds of plays at ISU's 7-on-7 camp last year, that's why the coaches offered him so early, why they wanted him up there early, he not only has the size of a linebacker but great coverage skills and playmaking instincts. And some posters on CF thought in-state kids like him were a reach...the kid should still be in high school and he's owning sophomore and juniors at practice.

A positive turnover margin wins more games than it loses.

That is great additional information on why he looked like a better receiver than the RB - he's had more experience being a WR.

Haha, yeah so true... but I hope whoever was in charge of watching for offensive pass interference in our pracitices has tightened up their whistle. Because with the ridiculous amount of those penalties what were called on us the first few games of last year, have to think we were pushing the physical blocking but maybe swallowing the whistle too much.

Have you watched any of the last few Iowa VS ISU games? ISUs WR almopst never get off the line without being mugged, and I don,t remember anything ever getting called.

Great, we have problems with ball security.

Joking aside, he should be an exciting player after a couple years into the S&C program and accustom to playing LB at the Big 12 level.

I thought the same thing too. Rhoads was more peeved about the fumble than excited about the big defensive play.
